You know it deserves the GOTY.

In Japan, you mean?

I don't think the game is big enough for the general public to understand the tie-in.

I doubt squid will ever take off enough in the US to matter lol

Anywhere really. But if someone does this, it would be most certainly in Japan.

A restaurant tried it but costumers complained about the inappropriate usage of children pictures in food menus. One consumer said that it's all semantics but she want's to "protect her children"  and put an immedate stop for their "promotion of cannibalism"

It would be a huge leap for anyone off the street to get the reference, even in Japan. Any other part of the world, and it would be completely irrelevant to 99.9999 percent of the population. I really hope this game becomes a commercial success though.

The hype is smaller, way smaller than you think.

There are far better selling games than this Nintendo game and the people outside gaming have no interest in making reference to any of them.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

Do Nintendo fans really think Splatoon is a big deal?

I mean, its a fun game, but it won't even be in the top 10 games o 2015

It would be fun, but not widely appealing.

The game is mostly aimed towards kids (holds up flame shield), and I doubt most kids are willing to eat any seafood, let alone squid, so I don't think it would be worth it to make a promotion.
