Forums - Gaming Discussion - I pray the Steam Machine becomes a competitive console.

For 3 generations in a row, it has been Nintendo VS Playstation VS Xbox. To me, this generation is the worst out of all generations for gaming. I have never had any reasons to dislike gaming in my life until now. I enjoy the Wii U, but that is not to say it has some HUGE issues with the console, don't get me wrong. So, I have been getting into PC gaming much more simply because they are doing it right and consoles are doing it wrong. I don't play PC because I want to see an extra few frames a second just so I can brag to "console peasents" because I am "Master race". No, none of that. I enjoy it simply because I don't have to be in constant fire of which console is better. I don't need to pray which game comes to my console. I don't need to have any of the problems with this generation. If the Steam Machine is a console killer, it will be a wake-up call for all 3 companies that they ALL need to get their act together.

Mark my words, if it stays at just these 3 companies with dominant consoles next generation, I feel the game market doesn't go a decade without crashing from today. I am getting sick of the crap going on in the game industry, and we need a console to save it. That's my opinion at least.

Neh, with those PC prices, it really won't sell very well. Majority of those Steam machines are rip off gaming PCs with nearly zero benefits to getting them. The concept of the Steam machine was great, the execution was horrible

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Honestly the issue is the WiiU... you went with PC gameing instead of getting a 2nd consol I take it?

on topic: Pretty sure SteamMachines are going to flop.

the cheapest versions are much more expensive than the PS4, while being weaker.
If you want best graphics possible at 350-400$ xbox/ps4 will hand the SteamMachines their arses.

If your going to spend 1200+ for a steammachine, you could just have a normal top of the line pc.

It doesnt fit in anywhere.. and theres little to no benefit to it, it doesnt forfill any needed role, do anything differnt from a pc.

I want a new competitor to enter the console race too. But I want that competitor to appeal to me, and honestly steam machines do -not- appeal to me so their existence to me is meaningless. I have enough disposable income to support two gaming machines but right now my primary choice is PS4 and Nintendo would be a somewhat distant second.... I'd like there to be a primary and a close second.

I think Steam Machines are a bit overpriced. And it looks like some parts can't even be upgraded. Steam Machines seem to be a good idea but I'm not sure where the audience is. I had my PC hooked up to my 50" TV before but I was at a serious disadvantage in CSGO. I feel many serious PC gamers are ultra competitive and would rather play on a monitor that provides a smaller input delay. I think they are targeting console gamers who want to get into PC gaming but don't want to deal with the hassle of it. How large is this audience? The Machines already shown off are pricey for the performance you get. I think a PS4 and Xbox One can out perform the cheapest ones and have exclusives to boot.

I play both consoles and my PC depending on the game so I am quite happy with what I have. I see no benefit in adding another PC even if it is a steam machine. I am interested in the controller and steam link, however.

Steam Machines will flop. They don't appeal to most consoles gamers as they will get a PS4,Xbox or Wii U. They don't appeal to PC gamers as they build their own. So who is this for? A few curious people and money burning a hole in their pocket? Sorry not going to cut it.

Industry can barely handle 3 systems it will implode with 4.

There are enough competitors in the market. What there isn't enough is competition. SteamBoxes are not really competing in any way. Their hardware is more expensive, its support will be smaller due to SteamOS (and because the fact publishers can controll their prices better on consoles than on PCs, and they won't abandon that for now), and they don't offer anything that can't be obtained on PC.

If other companies enter to the console wars, they will aim for micro consoles that have tons of services besides gaming. The regular console market is getting too expensive to develop (unless you're GTA or other big title, the cost of making games is growing faster than the userbases), most companies are migrating to smaller and safer developements (mobile), and most companies are putting too much pressure on consumers (pay for online, preorder bonuses, DLC, microtransactions...).

You know it deserves the GOTY.

It won't be a competitor, it's just another way to play the lead platform :D

Steam Machines look to be a niche market, hopefully I'm wrong. The one benefit it will have is in about 2 years, whatevers available in the $449 model will absolutely destroy what the PS4 and Xbox One can push (comparing 2017 Steam Box vs 2017 Xbox One/PS4.. if Steam Box makes it that long.)

I think SteamMachines are the ones with the most to fear actually.

If Windows 10 upd for Xbox makes it able to play "normal" pc games, that alone would kill anything the steammachines could hope to achieve. I dont really think theres any reason MS wouldnt want their consol able to be a 2-in-1 type (both a normal pc, and a gameing consol).

The problem is by then the PS4 will be 299$ :P

And still have better perf/price point than any steammachine will.
