Forums - General Discussion - 13 year old Girl commits Suicide After Dad Shares Public Shaming Video

I think public shaming is great form of punishment. Embarrassment is a great way to alter behavior. But as with all things it must be done appropriately, I would not suggest it as punishment for someone who is suicidal. And seeing as you can't beat your kids no more, what else is left? Embarrassment, locking them up, or let them run wild I guess.

Everything is wrong with public humiliation

Let me clarify something.  If I scold my daughter in private, I'll scold her in public. If I correct her in private, I'll correct her in public. If I need to drag her kicking and screaming from point "a" to point "b", I'll do it regardless of where we are.  Children shouldn't feel that they have a save haven in public just because there might be some kind of "outcry".  I raise my daughter.  Not the trend of popular knee-jerk emotional reaction.

Thats the way to do it!

Public shaming: There's a way to do it and a way to abuse it.

I have mixed feelings about this:

First of all I don't think the Father is a "bad parent" when it comes to public shaming, from the looks of the article it seems he warned her of whatever action she did multiple times; this public shaming video seems to be the final straw in trying to teach her a lesson.(which sadly MIGHT have lead to her death)

second we don't know if this was the cause of her commit suicide, it could have been the act she committed(in which she got caught) that lead to her committing suicide; however the video could've been a tipping point in her decision. I never blame the victim of suicide, but a 15 sec video shouldn't be a cause to commit suicide, especially since her hair would've grown back quickly. but then again teenage years are just a swirl of emotions and we don't know enough back story but I just can't see the loss of one's hair to be a cause of suicide.

Also I could be wrong but I haven't seen many reports of children committing suicide do to public shaming; I remember watching on the news about this girl who shop lifted and she has to where a "I shoplifted" T-shirt(or one of those billboard things) while she picked up trash, or a boy who disobeyed his parents and got a whacky haircut and had to go to school(kind of like the situation above but without the unfortunate loss of life) or just recently when the riots of Baltimore where going on a mother received a great amount of praise when she caught her son participating in the riots and gave him a good thrashing and dragged him home.

Lastly calling a father a bad parent is the last thing he needs to hear, he just lost his daughter; no parent should have to bury his child, I'm sure he loved her enough to warn her of whatever action she committed before finally posting the video that may have lead to her suicide. And no parent is perfect we all have flaws that we inherently pass down to or children or siblings or whomever, and one type of punishment might be accepted by some and rejected by others it doesn't make them a bad parent(unless it was against the law where they live)
