Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii U Japan sales 2013 vs 2014 vs 2015

Wii U is above 10k for 17 weeks now.

I remember people saying that Splatoon boost would make Wii U above 10k for 2 or 3 weeks... Of course, Mario Maker is helping a lot too.

Next week is a little hollyday in Japan, so hopefully WiiU holds well/has a little bumb for next week as well.
Another good week or two like this and it'll be caught up to 2013.
Hopefully Nintendo has learned from last years mistake and will provide better promotions/bundles/pricecut for the hollyday season. If they play this right, this can be the WiiUs best year in japan yet.
We will see if it will be it's peak year, I think 2016 has a crack at it with a pricedrop and provided they don't kill off momentum with the NX.

Seems like 2015 will most likely beat 2014, so i think now its time to focus on 2013.

However, I think the only game to give a notable boost is XCX, but sorry if I missed something out.

That already released in Japan ;P

Next big hitters are Amiibo Party Feat. AC and SMTxFE. Also expected is a holiday bundle with Splatoon and maaaayyybe a price cut. If all those happen, it should be able to beat 2013, but it will be very hard regardless!

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

I don't expect a Splatoon Bundle, they already have the SMM bundle and SMTxFE also has it's own bundle. 3 Bundles would be a bit too much imo

It looks this will be best year for Wii U in Japan.

Oh yeah, I forgot :P

And yeah, those games will probably give the Wii U a small boost, but i'm not sure as to how much of a boost they will give.

Maybe, but since Splatoon became such a big hit in Japan, it might be the best for Nintendo to make a bundle for the holidays. And, I don't remember how many, but in 2013 bundles were what helped the Wii U sell a lot in the latter part of the year.

They had 2 similar bundles in Japan in the holiday of 2013. One was black and the other was white.

The white bundle (32,800 yen) had: matching Wii Remote Plus, 30 days of Nintendo x Joysound Wii Karaoke U service and digital copies of New Super Mario Bros. U and Wii Party U.

The black bundle had all of that plus a copy of Wii Fit U and a Fit Meter for about 2,000 yen more.

They honestly had incredible value, and it's no wonder sales shot up during the holidays because of it. The best they could do now is have a similar limited Splatoon promotional bundle at the same price as the lower-end Wii Party U bundle, and have it come with a Wiimote, a copy of Mario Kart 8 and maybe a $10-15 eShop card or something. Then you'd have the Super Mario Maker bundle as the standard for people who want that game more, and the Genei Ibun Roku #FE bundle later in the year to appeal to the RPG crowd. Sadly, I don't think this will happen, but they need to find a way to match the PS4 price cut.

Oh the big days when wii u had killer deals, selling 70k-110k and we were lurkers here(december'13)!Great memories!:P  Do you remember the 110k week?Oh...The bundle of wii party u had also given a 1500% boost in it's week of release in november 2.8k->42k!

And then  in 2014 the complete dissappointment,i.e no deals, just the release of Mario kart 8 bundle in mid november, 9 months after the game release, lol well done nintendo!:P

In a thread about wii u sales in Japan in 2015 back in march when I was predicting timidly the boost and momentum by the almighty splatoon and been mocked shamelessly for that, help of other releases huge(in this time we didn't know about the impressive super mario maker) and not so big(xenoblade,(shin megami tensei x fire emblem, yoshi wooly world e.tc,and I had overhyped Pokken fighters well we will see in 2016,also Animal crossing amiibo party might be a secret power too,for yokai dance,I'm fucking perplexed,I can't express any opinion, although it has yokai on it, sothat's an advantage),I had a dispute with a guy and asked the following question to my opposer''what if Nintendo launch again killer bundles in 2015(viz,bundles that you're essentially saving money by purchasing them)''!

I hope Nintendo to fulfil what you suggested,pretty smart darling(mario kart 8+splatoon lethal combination),as always!:P  ;)

The Mario kart 8 bundle abolisment for the replacement by Super mario maker bundle wasn't a good omen though, why not keeping both,ok I understand, retaining one, means focus to that bundle, ergo more sales for super mario maker which is a recent release, but this move makes so much difference...?

Yep, the deals in 2013 were completely brilliant and 2014 was a huge disappointment. The MK8 bundle was lame in comparison, and didn't offer much. At least the SMM bundle came at launch and not months later, lol.

I think the the removal of the MK8 bundle is an indicator of 2 things. The first being that Nintendo simply wants to push Super Mario Maker more, and the other might be that they are displacing it (which would make sense for the Splatoon bundle I suggested, but that could be wishful thinking).

Nintendo could do so many things for the Wii U in Japan, but it's up to them. They have to be willing to sacrifice some to reap the benefits. Even just limited deals would do wonders this holiday, and they have the appealing software to do it. The ball's in their court.
