Not sure if the "trying to surprise Sony" part is quite right -- common sense would suggest that, like with the Xbox One, Microsoft is just running behind schedule and will launch pretty hot -- but I've talked to a few third-party developers who said they were frustrated by the lack of info on Scarlett, especially compared to Prospero.

Wouldn't surprise me if they decided to push their launch window to Spring 2021.

Na, they've let us know about the next box at e3. There's no chance of them being behind schedule either.

It'll be so close to specs and components with the PS5, I doubt 3rd parties will particularly suffer due to not having any access to the Scarlett kit.

Trying to keep something a "secret" doesn't exactly seem logical either. I'd put money on both of the companies knowing exactly what the other is building.

Yeah, I'm not buying the behind schedule thing from Jason Schreier either. I remember MS in an interview saying that their hardware team was already working on the next Xbox at the same time they were working on Scorpio (XB1 X) way back in 2017. There's no way that you can go from prototyping next-gen consoles 2 years ago to being significantly behind schedule imo.

Besides, while Jason Schreier has alot of good developer sources, particularly at 3rd party publishers and studios like Ubisoft (dude leaked every AC game from 2012-2018), Tom Warren has always had better MS sources than Jason. Warren leaked Durango (XB1), Scorpio (XB1 X), Scarlett, and Lockhart (which MS later confirmed was a real prototype that got cancelled due to concerns from developers that it would hold back development) as far as I know, and was one of the first sources for each of them, if not the first source for each of them.

Fact is, Phil committed to having the most powerful console when Scarlett was first announced. The only way to insure that happens, without corporate espionage (which is illegal), is to pretend that Scarlett is weaker than it is right up until the last moment, and then change the specs to make them more powerful once it is too late for Sony to make changes. I just hope that they are willing to subsidize the cost of being the most powerful console, will be majorly disappointed if Scarlett doesn't have price parity with PS5, even more so if PS5 is $500 and Scarlett is even higher than $500. Both at $400 would be ideal, but I just don't see that happening with the cost of the parts that are going into it (mid-high end GPU, mid-high end desktop CPU, a significant amount of GDDR6 RAM, 1 TB SSD's which are reportedly quite fast, vapor chamber cooling) unless there is significant subsidizing on the part of both Sony and MS. Both at $500 is probably best case scenario at this point.
