Forums - General Discussion - Is grand theft auto 3 the best selling game ever?

you know what I hate, not being able to trade my medals on metroid prime cos I dont have a the net on my wii so it means I cant unlock all the cool bonuses!!! that is the worst thing nintendo has ever done to try and get a fan to do something like connect up to other players! pokemon I can understand cos it made it more fun to get ya friends to play along but mp is just unfair! that decision doesnt make sence, all it does is excludes less fortunate players.

155 world wide for all pokemon games acording to this article http://www.gamestyle.net/news/3072
so the GTA 3 series might be around the high end of middle as far as sales for entire series go, it definatly falls far below pokemon, which destroys your original idea :p

edit: That artical is way old to, from last year so you could prolly ad a few more mill to the number cos of the new pokemon games that have come out since

and because pokemon is all about the same pokemon world you could call them expansions into the ever expanding world of pokemon meaning that no one game is of a different series, their like versions of the same world or what ever, but thats debatable weather you want to take the view ive taken by including all the games like this. its up to you, just one way of looking at the arguement on hand

Keep it real guys, dont hate mario, hate the player

Pokemon red/green/blue is like the PS3 with 20, 40, 60 and 80 GB.

Perfect analogy. Claiming that red/green/blue are seperate games is like claiming those SKUs are seperate consoles. The only difference is one or two minor features.

one thing is for certain: Pack in games DON'T COUNT!! You hear that vgchartz.com? stop counting pack ins. People don't choose to buy these games!

If they're so similar why not simply have it all in one game? Is it memory constraints on the cartridge or is Nintendo just milking Pokemon fans? Why don't they do it with Super Smash Brothers Brawl? Have three almost identical versions with a few unique characters and levels in each? They could call them SSBB Blue, SSBB Red. and SSBB Green... Then fans could pay $150 buying all three versions and basically getting the full SSBB game.

It's pretty much Nintendo milking Pokemon fans.  In theory it encourages Pokemon players to get together and trade their Pokemon back and forth to get the full set (rather than buying both versions which the friendless compulsive people do).

I'd get the milking theory if these multi version iterations occurred half way through the Pokemon series. But these games worked like this right from the beginning. Why? Because it's kind of the point. the idea of trading pokemons with your friends to build up your collection is a major feature of the game and part of it's success (both in sales AND quality).

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Your all wrong.

The best selling game of all time is Tetris. The second best selling game of all time is Mrs Pacman. The third best selling game of all time is Pacman. These titles have been on sale since their inception, and though usually relegated to arcade collections, and cell phone play. They are still selling decades after their release. Simple addictive little games.

I wish I could provide the sales figures, but these are the top three best selling videogames in the world today. Anyone with a decent cell phone can buy them for a couple dollars, and you can find them in cheap hand held game players around the planet. Further more you can find them on every major console right now.

Wait a minute I forgot to pick those up for either of my consoles. Next time I have some spare points I will have to make sure to pick up a couple copies.

Well, if you are going to count any game, then it has to be solitaire. It comes with every version of Windows, all the way back to 3.11

Windows accessories are not stand alone games. Nobody bought Windows for solitaire. This isn't a fine distinction its an obvious one. The question wasn't which is the best selling operating system of all time. The question was very obvious, and your trying to twist out of my rightness.

Were you really to be technical the best selling game of all time would be your standard deck of cards. Most adults perhaps buy a dozen decks in their lives. However most of us can understand a question without having to have posts written like legal disclaimers.

Are you counting all versions of Tetris or just the original? Most Tetris iterations would be considered sequels to a degree. The Tetris for the DS is not SEGA Tetris is not Tetris Attack is not Tetrisphere. Plus Tetris was packaged with the Gameboy which is where a good majority of the sales come from.

No thats a false claim. Super Mario Brothers sold 40 million copies world wide on the NES. Source check VGChartz top sellers of all time.

Well, how about Wii Play? (not yet, but if it got there, would it count?). You can buy a controller without the game, so some could claim that a most copies sold were purchased for the game.

I know, I am just arguing for the sake of arguing at this point, but just curious.

@Dodece. I was kidding. But on a serious note, sudoku might be up there. All iterations are payed the same, so I would call them the same game, and you can get it for everything. No clue how many copies have sold, but if you ad up all the phones, PC games, stand alone hand held, and console games, it's probably way up there in sales.
