Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Has the Wii U irreparably damaged Nintendo's image?

Well of you like the taste of 4 hour long games, completely broken games, remakes, and online only games I guess we just have different tastes then. Not to say these are the only games to release on other systems, there are a few PS4 and Xbone games I think are amazing but the majority of them seem to follow a pattern. These are what is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Different strokes though.

Also, the Wii U has outsold the Sega Saturn lifetime right now by about 200,000 and the gap will only get wider. It's (Sega Saturn's) best selling game was Virtua Fighter 2 which sold 1.93 million which has also been vastly outsold.

Main rule of business. Making good games dont matter. Making good "business decision" matters.

Its great taht you enjoy Wii U games. But the thing is people like you are limited. This also reflects in business.

Yeah, because Gamecube was a hot seller....

He didn't ask if the wii u was a hot seller.

You're not old enough to really know just how much core gamers mocked Gamecube. I was there, I know. If you think Wii soured that demograph, you're wrong. It started with N64 and slowly went down hill, ending with Wii. But the Wii certainly wasn't where it all started to go wrong with regards to core gamers.

Well, i didnt buy the console for third parties so, i'm not bothered about that.

But Nintendo has been slow and innefective at adressing sales issues. That makes everyone lose trust on it. The delays have hurt it alot aswell.

At the rate it is going the Wii U will take another 2-3 months to break 10 million according to vgchartz! It will be lucky to be at 11 by the end of the year, even with Star Fox. Then as the new system comes next year hopefully and not this year it will struggle even more. The (most likely scenario) dual release Zelda game will not help much. Makes me sad and a little upset at the same time that Nintendo a billion dollar company could let it get this bad, this dire!

So, WU will be lucky to sell 1 million in 4 month? 4 HOLIDAYS month? When in 2013 (the worse year for WU) it have sold around 1,200,000 only in December?

WU will be at +12m by years end, maybe more.

WU was nothing for Nintendo.
The Wii maybe have damaged the Nintendo image, but definitive not irreparably...
If so, why 3DS is selling so good?

We all know the reason of the WU flop... The only thing that Nintendo can do is called the next console "No-Wii" and all of those dark times are over...

No, the Wii U did much good.

I do not believe that the Wii U has irreparably harmed Nintendo's image at this point. Depending on how Nintendo chooses to proceed, the Wii U could either build-up or damage Nintendo's reputation with gamers.

If Nintendo chooses to support the Wii U well for a good 4 years with 1st party releases and give fans titles like Zelda U and Metroid U, then I think the Wii U could be long remembered as an amazing console that was commercially underrated (like the Dreamcast). That said, if Nintendo chooses to cut support for the Wii U after 2015 and hastily jump ship to the NX then this can harm Nintendo's reputation.

If Nintendo decides to port Zelda U to the NX either as a dual release or an NX exclusive, then this would probably be the most harmful thing that Nintendo could do. They will lose thousands of fans and the trust issues will be as severe as what we saw after the Sega Saturn was abruptly discontinued.

Yes and no.

I think the Wii U damaged more the image of the "lets make a console based around a controller!" concept. That's the main thing with the Wii U's legacy is the controller will be seen as a failure.

In terms of the console itself though, that's a little trickier because I think Wii U has become a kind of hip thing for game connoisseurs to enjoy. Much like the Sega Dreamcast. Most people look at the Dreamcast in hindsight favorably.

It's not the Dreamcast itself that people look down on.

I do think though 3/4 consoles now that have failed to sell above 35 million and declining hardware sales for every Nintendo console if we move out the Wii craze, does present Nintendo with an overall serious credibility issue with a good number of consumers.

Like the third party thing in particular is kind of past the point of "well maybe this can get better", I think most people are going to be very jaded towards Nintendo going forward with regards to that.

Wii U certainly has not done anything for the "Nintendo consoles are for a limited range of Nintendo games only" label which isn't a good one to have.

People simply don't know about the Wii U.

If Nintendo changes their image and actually pushes what they have to offer, and continue offering quality games, they can bring awareness and make their brand a household name once again,=.

The Gamecube didn't stop the Wii.
