Forums - Sales Discussion - PS4 has done what Wii never could - hit 50% marketshare!

The 50% market share was an inevitability; the only debate was over when it would happen.

The only reason why it even matters, given that consumers have already spoken that the PS4 will be this generation's leading platform, is because that nice round 50% number was the number Nintendo fans on VGC were eagerly awaiting, with some of Nintendo's more zealous and enthusiastic fans arguing that when that happened, 3rd party developers would HAVE to funnel lead support resources to the Wii or risk going out of business or becoming irrelevant.

We can laugh about this in retrospect, but old time VGC users probably remember this.

How high can it go? 60% seems too much to me, but 55% could be attainable.

60%+ by the end of the gen, no doubt. WiiU won't last long and PS4 will always outsell XB1 easily.

Just to clarify if it hasn't been already. For the PS4 to keep this percentage it has to keep selling at the rate of 2:1 vs the XBone+WiiU on average.

Probably not that easy.

Bolded the important part. PS4 has all the biggest games. People don't care if they're exclusive or not. While WiiU is getting 1-2 games per month at most, PS4 is getting multiple games per week.

I dont want to derail the main topic, but the Wii U have only 2 games (retail) released this very year, Mario Party 10 and Kirby Rainbow Curse.

The Ps4 have more retail games released on a single day than the Wii U in half a year.

Just wanted to make that correction

Oh. Holy shit, it's worse than I thought. Seriously, wat. I can hardly believe that. And people dare say it deserves more sales. Wth

Why? This year it's at like 60% marketshare.
Lifetime sales for WiiU won't be much higher than 15m. XB1 could do anything from 45m-75m imo so that means for PS4 to keep its marketshare it would only need to sell 60-90m...

Hmm... I guess the WiiU could become the parent's christmas choice again if they just release some Mario, and since PS4 sales will probably be fizically impeeded, we can assume that the PS4 will not at all win the holidays at 2:1. Those large holidays volumes will offset the overall yearly numbers against the PS4, so it will lose the 50% marketshare.

If it will do it though I will be surprised.

Quit bringing up 3DS guys. This is between home consoles. We all can see 3DS has over 80% Market Share for handhelds. That's to be expected. Kudos to Sony. Move on kk?

DS still had like ~65-70% marketshare lol

ok, about 65%, but not 100% of the handhelds.

The main point here those is some people only have a handheld as they only buy one console (I have a friend like this who buy which ever console appeals most regardless if it is handheld or home console). So Sony, Nintendo (assuming that some people also just have a Vita) and Microsoft is still competing against them when it comes to consoles so really, overall, it is a pseudo marketshare when you only take one group into consideration.

Gameboy was 100% of handelds. Anyhow, might as well compare ps4 sales with the number of steam accounts while you are at it.

What do you mean? Microsoft tried for 2 gens to break into the mainland European markets and Japan, and haven't done well. Its not Microsoft's fault for that.

Microsoft's inability to penetrate a new market is actually 100% Microsoft's own fault.  They clearly approached it incorrectly.

Your telling me Microsoft could've penetrated Japan? How so? My ears are all open, tell me!

I would be more interested to see if it outsells the Wii when all is said and done.
