Metroid or Zelda.

I'd say it should be Metroid; getting a Zelda film right, that doesn't harm the IP would be near impossible (and there's the rumoured TV show), and a Mario film would be similarly difficult to get right.

Metroid, on the other hand; would work well as a film, and is a franchise that isn't huge in popular perception, so a film would make a lot of sense as a way of increasing knowledge of the brand. It's also a sort of film that hollywood knows how to makes; Pandorum, Prometheus, Event Horizon all have that sense of exploration that makes Metroid what it is.

Plus, there's not enough sci fi films anymore.

Star Fox would be a perfect fit for movies so I'll always say that.

I think Star Fox would better suit a half-hour morning cartoon format like:

or

I guess F-Zero since Universal has experience in racing movies with Fast and Furious. F-Zero is more futuristic though so that might make it difficult.

I could see Metroid being a sci-fi movie since it borrowed themes heavily from Aliens.

The Mother series would be great movie as well but I think it would be better as animated movie or even an anime series.

A live action movie from Universal could have potential as well since they were known for monster movies in the past. This movie could be about the future where most Pokemon are extinct and an established research facility dedicated to bringing them back has recently found success. Because of this, they are using their large nature reserve, nickname Safari Zone, as the temporary home for these revived Pokemon.

But theres lies a secret about Safari zone.

The research facility is actually run by a powerful company that also wants to revive the ultimate Pokemon in the past in the Safari zone itself! They plan to control it afterwards for their greedy and potentially evil needs. Luckily a group of researcher are aware of this plan and have invited renowned Pokemon breeders and experts to the Safari zone with their company's permission to help study and domesticate the newly revived Pokemon. But once they arrive, they are informed by the researchers about their evil company's plan.

However, the evil company knows the researcher's plan! Once the researchers are finished telling the Pokemon experts their plan they ask for their help to thwart the evil company's plan. But suddenly Pokemon appear and capture the researchers! Several of the company members appear from the shadow and they inform everyone that they know their secret is out. They then challenge all the Pokemon experts and breeders to an epic Pokemon battle (knowing they brought their own). The company members are defeated and reveal the rest of the company is inside Safari zone searching for the revived ultimate Pokemon they wish to control. They also reveal all the Pokemon in the reserve have turned wild and will attack everyone they see. It's now a race to see who captures the ultimate Pokemon first!

I always thought Metroid could make for an awesome movie, but it would be too hard to really capture the feel of it. Thankfully watching Fury Road a few days ago made me realize it would actually be possible to make it good.

I'm not saying Metroid should go all Mad Max like, but Fury Road did have a direction and feel that could work with Metroid. Lots of action, not a lot of talking (relatively silent protagonist), but still managing to tell a hell of a powerful story while at it.

I've not seen Fury Road yet (need to wait for my sister to finish uni so she can come baby sit for an evening), but I see Metroid working similar to Pandorum (I highly recommend watching that film if you haven't); spooky sci fi horror, with a slowly developing plot.

Live action: Legend of Zelda

CG Animated: Super Mario, which eventually sets up a Smash Brothers movie (ala how Marvel built up to the Avengers with Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, etc. movies beforehand).
