Square-Enix sees the potential in a PS5 release of Final Fantasy 15, in a statement below Square-Enix states

''Creating quality next generation games takes a lot of time and effort. We at Square-Enix have always wanted to push current and future technology to its full potential and make sure we put out a product that satisfies our own tastes,as well as the taste of our consumer.

For many years we have been working many sleepless nights to bring you the latest entry into the Final Fantasy franchise,Final Fantasy 15. We have made many great strides through trial and error to realize the full potential of the Playstation 4. However, upon releasing the Final Fantasy 13 saga on last generation consoles,we realized we had to earn the trust of our devoted fan base back by showing them something completely brand new and go back to the core Final Fantasy feeling. We also feel as a company that with the excitement we've seen with the new Duscae Demo will help fans fall in love with the franchise all over again.

This now brings me to our new exciting announcement regarding the future of Final Fantasy 15. We feel that we need just a little bit more time to bring our fans the game they've desired for many years,so we at Square-Enix are happy to announce that development has moved over exclusively to next generation hardware,the Playstation 5.

This decision doesn't come lightly,but we feel as game developers and as a company that the trust that needs to be earned back from our fans will take some time. To make sure all Final Fantasy fans fall back in love with the franchise once more,we are also announcing that for the remainder of the Playstation 4's life cycle, we will release various versions of the Duscae Demo to show people what they can look forward to on the Playstation 5.

This is so surprising!

The PS1 to PS2 gap was 5 years. The PS2 to PS3 gap was 6. Here's hoping for another 5-6 year gap. 

Sounds about right.

PS4 R&D began 5 years before its release (in 2008).

2015 + 5 = 2020
