Forums - Politics Discussion - Congrats Ireland! First country to recognize Same Sex Marriage by Pop Vote!

As I postulated, Christianity is now dead in the West. The family has been betrayed by people of my generation and younger. The same caucus that voted in Obama in office twice who is now tearing the US apart from within.

A sad day indeed for those who believe in family values and the social order of the universe. But the fight will continue. Praise Allah.

I believe in both. I just don't believe that discrimination against people who are same sex attracted has anything to do with either.

This is such great news. I hear that the vote was not even close, a landslide victory for equal rights.

But rather than just a victory for same-sex marriages, I find this a huge win for the entire Republic of Ireland, which managed to achieve so much in so little time - most of us still think of Ireland as this retrograde Catholic country of the past. I am very happy that they are removing that misconception with this strong statement.

I agree it's time to let people do as they are going too, No one is hurting anyone, accept bigots feelings. So this is a great victory for equal rights. Our gay brothers and sisters have been oppressed long enough.

You will be moderated if you don't agree.

Welcome Ireland to the land of Equality!

You do understand that Ireland was the firs to vote on this in the world, therefore, I'm not sure you have the right to "welcome" them to the "land of equility" seeing as the country already has a great record in this regard and....again.....the first where the people were allowed to vote on the issue. Maybe when the US catches up, then we can welcome you? Instead they leave it up to some old judge in the US to decide whats best for the people in a social matter. Then the likes of it being illegal in many US states for inter racial marriage until 1967, that would be just another example of how the US can't really welcome someone into this land you speak of, when clearly they are so far outside of said land, that's its not even funny.

So please, in future, think before patronizing or speaking down.

Hey, you are taking this way too personally.  I'm not putting anyone down.  The land Ireland stands on is now free from sexual marraige discriminizatoin.

Remember wasn' t until 1993 that it homosexuality was decriminalized. That's not very long ago at all.  That's a whole lot of progress for the people of Ireland.

All of the changes in the USA have come from grass roots groups, many of which I have help run and found for that 28 years.  Do you really think it would have won if not for the efforts and changes in the States and other Countrys the past 14 years?  Many of the changes have also come from the legistaltion system and not judges.  And it would have come much sooner if Arnold Schwarzenegger wouldn't have been such a coward and go back on his promises when he ran for Govenator.

Same Sex marriage is legal Federally in the USA.  So it must be legal in all the state.  Currently, 7 states are still fighting it, but those would have probably still not allow interracial marriage or women voting if they weren't forced.  It's happened, and may finally be over by the end of this year.

But honestly, I think voting on civil rights is not a good thing to do.  They are fundamental civil rights which should not be up to the whim of the majority.   But as I understand, the only way Ireland could make this change.

Um what?  Many same sex couples are Christian, and many Christian Churchwa perform and have perform same sex marriages for nearly a centery (at least that I know about - and probably much, much longer.)  I have no doubt that if Jesus were hear today he would give a thumbs up to Ireland.

What? There is not tearing apart of the US from this other than a tiny cruel minorty.  It's getting stronger, although we still have much more reforms and things to improve.  Obama has stopped the USA from near bankrupsy, got Bin Laddin, ended the wars.  Sure we need to do more, but it was uncomfortably close to colapsing there for a while.

Support for Same Sex Marriage comes from support for Family Values - because a same sex couple can be a familiy and some ever have kids.  Are you saying kids shouldn't be with married parents?

Sorry if the world become a more fair, better and more nurturing place makes you uncomforable.  I hope someday you can see it for the beautiful thing that is love.

They stated here that no priest would be forced to officiate a same sex marriage if they had issues with lgbt couples personally, because I'm sure no couple wants to have the happiest day of their lives marred by the fact that someone saying the words that bind you together for life does not feel comfortable doing so, but the catholic church here in Ireland did not stand against marriage equality as a single minded block, they knew that many priests here had feelings to the contrary and during the campaigns many members of the church were out in favour of a Yes vote for equality, was great to see.
