As an innovation. Ahead of its time. Indispensible.

That is unless people think sales=quality. If that's the case we'll continue to see 8 more dual shock controllers that alternately remove and add rumble, touch pads, and funny looking lights.

novel is not the same as innovative.

innovative means a new idea on how do do something, that new thing as a meaningful improvement on the way that something is done, and the idea has a lasting impact.

the gamepad fails 2 of the 3 criteria to call it innovative.  the gamepad is novel but not innovative.

Some of you guys desparaging the comfort of the controller make me think you actually haven't spent a good deal of time with it. It is by far one of the most comfortable controllers ever made. Certainly it is true that not even Nintendo have put the controller to as good of use as they did with the Wiimote in WiiSports, but that's more about implementation and not a defect in the device.

In addition to the great comfort the controllers provides, it provides easy access to in-game maps and inventory, the ability to interact with your tv (power/volume), as well as providing you with an alternate display.

I feel like so many people like to talk crap about the controller from a system wars perspective, rather than from a "what's good for gaming" perspective. Don't worry...Nintendo and its tablet controller aren't going to win the gen. They're not going to change gaming as you know it (like they did with the Wii!). So quit hating just because you don't want to see that horse win the race. It's already been ran, and the WiiU is now being processed into dog food.

Some people just don't like it. I spent 8 weeks with it (my sisters boyfriend lived with us and he brought his Wii U with him) and I just couldn't get into it. It's not uncomfortable but I wouldn't call it comfortable at all.

And if 8 weeks is too short of a time then that's a point all on it's own.

8 weeks is time enough to know.  I'm definitely not saying that people can't find it uncomfortable.  I'm just saying that the console wars have inspired more detractors than people actually experiencing and spending quality time with the controller.

There are definitely a good chunk of people denouncing it before trying it.

Well considering it's called the "Gamepad" I'm gonna predict people will remember the Gamepad as an innovative fantastic controller. Cause that is what it is.

Well personally I will probably look back on it as "Oh right. That was this uncomfortably large Controller, that tried to be like a tablet but totally failed." That is in line with my look on the N64 Controller (liked it at first and then tested DS at a friends house) and the GC controller, which is imo a significant step up from the N64 Controller(!) but the button layout was terrible and the c-stick was nothing short of embarrassing (hello? dual sticks?).
However a vocal minority will sing its´praises from dusk till dawn....

EDIT: I friggin loved my DC and the Controller/VMCU. Right now I say 70% of my love is based n nostalgia and wrong memories.

Yup...RO friggin rocked

As an overpriced, messily-designed and somewhat uncomfortable peripheral with little practical use.

Basically, the way that most people already view 3D film.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

It's a fantastic, innovative and very usefull controller/peripheral,which enables me to game far more than I have ever been able to previously due to off tv play. Remote play done flawlessly, but sadly it will be labelled as a pet peeve of mine "The fisher price toy". I fucking hate that description, so ignorant.

A lot like how we look at the Power Glove or the Virtual Boy today. A really great idea that just wasn't implemented as good as could have been, due to poor decisions based on technology constraints.

I owned a Power Glove, and I demo'd a Virtual Boy.  I regretted begging my father for a Power Glove as a child.  And, I would have regretted buying the Virtual Boy for my younger brother for Christmas instead of the PS1 that I ended up getting him.  I wouldn't remotely lump the Wii U Gamepad in the same category.  I don't regret purchasing a Wii U in the least.  Does the Gamepad have untapped/unrealized/under-utilized potential?  Absolutely.  But, I still find it to be a better console interface than a standard controller.  If the next Nintendo home console doesn't have a gamepad type controller, it will feel to me like taking a step backwards in technology rather than forwards.

I'd agree the GamePad's failures are not to the same degree of those of the Power Glove or Virtual Boy.

In spite of its good ergonomics, but we have to admit, half-measures were taken in battery life, screen resolution, and the true portability of the GamePad. It's large enough to the point that it scares people in a way.

I sincerely believe GamePad 2.0 will be smaller and sleeker with vastly better battery life and resolution. And it'll work through the whole house, not just your living room.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
