Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 the "World's Most Powerful Console" According to New Sony Ad

And those alternatives are PCs. Which I've already made clear aren't consoles.

It's quite clear you'll say anything to discredit the PS4 at this point.

You started the thread by saying: "Unless you count steam machines aka steam consoles. But hey, why not." (But as I pointed out, those aren't out yet).

But then people replied and you kept moving goal posts to try to make sure the PS4 couldn't be viewed as the "most powerful console".

It's not "but hey, why not" anymore?

How so? When did I move goal posts? Because I didn't mention the alternatives? They are the same machines that were meant to be steam machines but since Valve pushed it back that means that it's less viable? Many were going to be shipping with both SteamOS and Windows to enable the user to be able to play the most games with the machine. If you think it's about the OS that makes it a console then I suppose the X1 can't really be considered a console since it uses a variant of Windows.

Again, a console is just a computer that is designed to mainly play games and be hooked up to a TV.

If you disagree, that's fine, but please post something that actually says any different. Your link to the steam machines said nothing about them not being consoles, that's why I completely dismissed it. Other than a bunch of forum posts like this, you aren't likely to find anything that says anything to the contrary that isn't entirely opinion based with odd restraints to make a console a console. I really don't see why it's that big of a deal. Sony is using dishonest marketing, nothing new here.

So the rabbit is finally out of the hat.

Now, care to give us links to those alternative consoles you speak of?

Btw, my link to the steam machines was not meant to say that they are not consoles. It was to show you that those are not available to customers yet. Which makes the PS4 still the most powerful console, even when you stretch the definition of what a console is like you do.

It wouldn't be hard. But the fact remains: The game consoles don't run these programs and are gaming centric, unlike PCs.

You're right when you say game consoles are computers. Even if they're specialized ones. But PCs are not game consoles. So I don't see the point in arguing further here.

What the hell are you talking about? We are talking about what consoles are, not what PC's are. A console is a computer system designed to play games on a TV. Therefore the PS4 is NOT the most powerful console. Sure the Wii U is the most powerful console if you don't count the PS4, X1 and Steam Machines/alternatives. The X1 is the most powerful if you don't count the PS4 and Steam Machines/alternatives. This is no different.

Quote from Wikipedia (I know Wiki isn't the most reliable source but this a good approximation of what most people think)

The term "video game console" is used to distinguish a console machine primarily designed for consumers to use for playing video games in contrast to arcade machines or home computers.

So yes, the PS4 IS the most powerful console, because we are not counting home computers since many don't see those as consoles, being that they are not primarily designed for gaming. Even if a gaming rig is put together, it usually can do other things that consoles don't, and the makers of the tech didn't develop the all of the tech primarily thinking of gaming.

A console is a computer, but a computer is not categorized as console just like a cat is a mammal, but a mammal isn't categorized as a cat. So if the only competition for PS4 is Steam Machines (that aren't out yet), because PCs ARE NOT consoles, then the advertising is correct in stating that the PS4 IS the most powerful console out right now. No way of arguing otherwise.

"Check out the great exclusives coming in 2015." :-p

The same could be applied to Xbox one.

Well I'm looking forward to Halo 5, Tomb Raider, and Forza 6. So... no...

Its gonna be two years in and I'm still waiting for Sony to give me reasons to get a PS4. I have the money for a PS4, I want to give it to Sony, now they just need to deliver the games.

Well it is all down to opinon so no...

What is fact is the PS4 is destroying the Xbox One in sales and consumers prefere it over the Xbox one even though it is a lot cheaper.

Go figure

Well, I hope that's not the case. Wouldn't want Sony to become something I disliked about them again.

And sega blast processing ads were all fine and dandy?

A few of them decided to release them without SteamOS because they were already built and could be put on the market.

Have your pick.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

And I gave a link to Websters dictionary, a highly credible source defining what a console is.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

I has become rather apparent that many will fight to the bitter end as to what a console is, or is not within their own personal definition of what they are. So what makes the PS4 a console? Is it that Sony makes it? Is it that it plays games? Is it that if a company wanted to, like MS for instance, they could easily make MS Office for it? It can check email, it can allow you to watch and stream videos, chat face to face, allow you to stream a game you are playing to another person. It can work as a Blu-ray player and general media player. Is it a console?

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Sony has basically given up fighting because they think they've won the war already, big mistake. Having the most powerful console doesnt mean anything unless the games are fun, and if the library of games isnt diverse, which Sony seems to be going for right now because of their hubris, then they are going to end up attracting the same crowd as Xbox with just FPS jocks fawning over them while everyone else looks elsewhere.
