Forums - Gaming Discussion - Good RPG's with bad/mediocre stories

It would honestly be faster to ask which RPGs have good stories.

Geez, posts like these remind me how cynical gamers still are. Poor writers.

Final Fantasy XII. The story starts off very well, but drops off a quarter or so into the game. Despite that, I loved absolutely everything else about the game and it's my second favorite Final Fantasy game.

Legend of Grimrock and pretty much any game with Dungeon Master inspired gameplay, as their stories are generally very thin.

It's true, though, and I don't say it without reason.  It's not even necessarily a shot at writers.  Gaming, generally speaking, isn't very welcoming to complex storytelling.  Especially when dealing with fantasy, fans seem to want something interesting but still mildly generic.  They want Lord of the Rings retold, not The Left Hand of Darkness.  Besides, basic Hero Saves the World storytelling is a hell of a lot easier to adapt to gameplay than A Game of Thrones.

Skyrim......

and before you shot me, its main story was really meh, what was going on with the world was more interesting, but the main story its self was OK. the game its self was pretty good though.

Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning.

Fair point. I sunk about 100 hours into that game...the story just wasn't quite epic though.

But fuck I wish it had done well enough for a sequel.

It probably did do well enough to get a sequel... Just not well enough to keep its developer away from bankruptcy... And the ip is still in bankruptcy limbo...

Where I suspect it shall remain forever
