Forums - Gaming Discussion - Good RPG's with bad/mediocre stories

Fallout New Vegas. You got shot. Got to find out who shot you and took your delivery package.

.... Really?

Honestly, every RPG I've ever played with the exceptions of Mother 2 & 3, Planescape Torment and a handful of others had terrible stories. Almost no meaningful themes, paper thin plots and characters so one dimensional they can hardly be called characters and people not only lap it all up, they treat it like Shakespeare. Seriously, the vast majority of video games have lousy stories and RPGs are no exception.

Almost every worthwhile RPG from before 1994 or so. Final Fantasy 4, for example, is my favorite game in the main series, but the story is ridiculous at points. The ensemble of protagonists is lovable, but only Cecil and maybe Kain have much depth, the setting is nothing special, and then you have the second half of the game, where they add two miniature world maps with recolors of old enemies. And the Zeromus thing.

I'm also going to include at least half of the Pokemon series in this category.

Love and tolerate.

Legend of Dragoon. Fun game, but the cult fanbase VERY much overrates the story. It's sort of a mess with the characters dealing with everything one moment and then there being boring side-dialogues where everyone acts like they're ten. Plus disc four randomly decides to add a ton of backstory far too late into things.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

Final Fantasy 4 was the first RPG I ever played! It's hard not for me to look at with rose-colored glasses. But I agree Cecil and Kain were really the only very memorable characters. I totally loved the game as a kid, but I do find it hard to go back to :(

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

- Crisis Core: FF7
- Ni No Kuni

So Rydia's (who's mother was the Mist dragon you kill near the beginning of the game) story wasn't memorable, or Golbez who turns out to be your brother.

This is another good choice. The wasn't bad, but just kinda there. Enough to keep you moving along, but it's pretty common in Level 5 games.

As for Nep-nep, I actually love the story. The idea of the gameindustri banding together to fight piracy is hilarious to me.

Well on the other Level-5 games like Jeanne D'Arc (PSP) and Rogue Galaxy (PS2). You cared about the characters. In WKC, the story was so bland, you just wanted to kick the next high level giant monsters butt and survive the story. Usually, its the other way around. lol!!!

And I agree with Nep-Nep hahahaha xD
