Honest question: How old are the people who are voting for the PS2 as their #1 system?

I ask this because I'd imagine that younger gamers who grew up when the PS2 was the must-have console would have had that system be a huge part of their childhood, and what we grow up with is often what we regard as great. It's why an 80s kid like myself gets nostalgic for things that remind me of the 80s & early 90s, things that that people who aren't part of my generation might not really "get." I'm 35, so back in my elementary and middle school years gaming was dominated first by the NES and then by the SNES and Genesis. I was already in high school when the PS1 and N64 came out. I didn't even have a PS2 until I was around 22 or 23, so childhood/teenage nostalgia doesn't enter the equation. Meanwhile, someone 10-15 years younger than me would have grown up well past the heyday of the 16-bit era, and the PS2 would have come out when they were still in grade school. While they may have played those older systems (perhaps they have older siblings that are gamers), they would have grown up with the PS2 as a huge part of their childhood and thus the nostalgia factor elevates it in much the same way it elevates older consoles in the eyes of older gamers.

I often get puzzled as to why the PS2 is so highly regarded. I never had many games for it, and I even felt that the sixth generation as a whole was kind of bland and forgettable aside from a few highlights. I was never a huge PlayStation fan, and the only reason I bought a PS1 (the first purchase I made when I got my first job in 1998) was because it had Final Fantasy, so needless to say the PS2 wasn't something I was hyped about. Nintendo was going through an odd experimental phase with their GameCube efforts that I just didn't get at the time (Mario using a water-spraying backpack? Cel-shaded Zelda? First-person Metroid? Two riders on the same kart in Mario Kart? What insanity is this?). Finally, the Xbox was "that other system that has Halo"; purely through accident I became a fan of a game that happened to not be on either PlayStation or Nintendo.

But then I realize exactly how old I am, and that there are people for whom none of this applies to. What I experienced as an adult younger gamers experienced as a kid. Back in the early 00s I was already largely set in my ways, my tastes having developed in and been shaped by the culture and technology of the 80s & early to mid 90s. Meanwhile kids born in the early to mid 90s were still going through the process of developing their tastes in games, music, etc., and like anyone else their tastes are going to be informed largely by what's popular with kids at the time.

So, is VGC mostly people twenty-somethings who grew up in the 90s and thus the PS2 gets the benefit of the nostalgia boost? Or was it really that great of a system and I just happened to be one of the few who didn't think it was all that?

I'm 30 and I'd take the PS2 over the SNES and Genesis combined. I can not even fathom how any other system can objectively be placed higher and I grew up on the Atari 2600 and NES. No nostalgia whatsoever, it's purely the quality of the PS2's library.

Why do you have the PS3 & 360 as the same choice?

the ps3 and 360 are essentially the same console as they share 90% of the same library. if you like the ps3, you like the 360 and vice versa. that, and poll option limits.

lol, no they are not essentially the same, and if you like one it definitely doesn't mean you like the other... have you ever seen how many people dislike opposing consoles?

Hmm. I would say the Wii U is the best console of all time as it runs all Wii titles, uses their peripherals and goes beyond that with HD graphics and of course - the GamePad.

Also: almost any game you can buy for the Wii U is an exclusive and an hit title.

But as the Wii U isn't listed - its the Wii for me. The motion controls were even more groundbreaking then the control pad of the NES. And virtually all mobile games - which hopefully isn't but it looks like as it will be the future of gaming - are just blatant copies of some of the game mechanics pioneered on the Wii...

Say whaaa :S

Yes, a lot of Nintendo exclusives are of great quality but calm down your innovation that and innovation this. It's tiring. Inspiration goes all ways.

Nintendo's biggest success the Wii and the "Wii" series of games that went to sell over 200 mill combined is a product of Nintendo being inspired by the PlayStation Eyetoy tech and series of games.

EyeToy Play Sports (motion controlled boxing, tennis, etc) -> Wii Sports (motion controlled boxing, tennis, etc)

EyeToy Play (motion controlled minigames) -> Wii Play (motion controlled minigames)

EyeToy Kinetic (motion controlled exercise game) -> Wii Fit (motion controlled exercise game)

EyeToy Monkey Mania (motion controlled party games) -> Wii Party (motion controlled party games)

EyeToy Groove (motion controlled rythm game) -> We Dance (motion controlled rythm game)

360?ps2? Both amazing consoles. And idk why people are mentioning current gen consoles, we to early to declare them the best yet

Coming from someone who's sign predicts the X1 will reach 75m LTD???

Nope

How does my prediction on sales relate to the fact that its to early to declare current gen consoles the best yet? They havent showed us anything for us to compare them to previous consoles. People are comparing a year or so of current gen consoles to many years of the other consoles from different gens. My sales prediction stems from the fact that i have enough information rn about existing consoles to compare their existing sales and qualities and extrapolate what i know to make a hypothesis on sales.I might be wrong, although i dont think i am. I could list the reasons but i dont want to derail the thread.

Ltd predictions by the time 9th Gen comes out

Ps4:110million

Xbox one :75 million( was 65)

Wii u: 20 milliion

"They"?  You mean Nintendo fans?  They called them that in an attempt to disparage both consoles, along with the connotation (from some) that HD was something they did not care about.  No one else used that term that I can remember.

Now look what you've done.  I'm probably going to be moderated because I used the name "Nintendo" in a post that wasn't completely positive.

Kindly keep such passive aggressive jabs to yourself. It is not conducive to an amiable forum environment.

as much as i agree with you about what youre saying, i hope you didnt report this guy so you can try to get him banned, because that is a really cheap way to get out of the arguments he brought to your attention. you completely bypassed what he was trying to say and instead focused on one part of his post that had nothing to do with his point.

for some reason, i dont get the feeling that you really care for an "amiable forum environment" and instead would rather be more focused on getting someone who doesnt agree with you kicked off of here. its a cheap tactic if you ask me.
