Forums - Sales Discussion - Biggest drop in sales in a game series?

GT5 to GT6 is one that comes to mind. Also wasn't Wii Sports Resort the true sequel to Wii Sports? In that case the drop isn't that bad.

Brain Training

1 Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day DS 2005 Misc Nintendo 4.74 9.18 4.16 2.04 20.12
2 Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day DS 2005 Misc Nintendo 3.43 5.36 5.32 1.18 15.29
3 Brain Age: Concentration Training 3DS 2012 Puzzle Nintendo 0.06 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.06

Figures like these are ultimate proof that smart devices have invaded the handheld space in a big way and is impacting the market hugely. That's just insane.

Maybe it`s time for some of these games to move to smartphones? A Brain Age game on the go on smartphones might not be a bad idea...

When you compare to consoles with radically different user bases, drops in sales are not that surprising.

You mentioned what I was going to say. Probably the next candy crush and angry birds as well. Didnt the original push 500 million downloads?

Yeah, Angry Birds is a BIG drop.

Original Angry Birds (2009):

Angry Birds (Android): ~221 million global downloads (free)

Angry Birds Free (iPhone): ~50 million global downloads (free)

Angry Birds HD Free (iPad): ~30 million global downloads (free)

Angry Birds (iPhone): ~28 million global downloads (price = $0.99)

Angry Birds HD (iPad): ~5.1 million global downloads (price = $2.99)

=

~334 million total global downloads

Compare this to the latest sequel:

Angry Birds Stella (2014)

Angry Birds Stella (Android): ~12 million global downloads (free)

Angry Birds Stella (iPhone): ~1.4 million global downloads (free)

Angry Birds Stella (iPad): ~693K global downloads (free)

=

~14 million total global downloads

That's a drop of ~320 million Angry Birds downloads.

what about tetris to tetris 2?

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Here is Candy Crush Saga:

Candy Crush Saga (Android) (free) = ~222 million global downloads

Candy Crush Saga (iPhone) (free) = ~99 million global downloads

Candy Crush Saga (iPad) (free) = ~25 million global downloads

=

~346 million total global downloads

*w/ Facebook data, the number is over 500 million (at least 1 out of every 23 Facebook users is a fan of this game)

Compared to Candy Crush Soda Saga:

Candy Crush Soda Saga (Android) (free) = ~79 million global downloads

Candy Crush Soda Saga (iPhone) (free) = ~13 million global downloads

Candy Crush Soda Saga (iPad) (free) = ~4.0 million global downloads

=

~96 million total global downloads

~250 million total global download drop

The drop isn't nearly as bad with Candy Crush Saga as it is with Angry Birds.

Rovio Entertainment has over-saturated the franchise...as a result, the Angry Birds franchise is quickly losing relevance with the average casual consumer.

Not to mention that Candy Crush Soda Saga still has room to grow, while Angry Birds Stella has been flatlining.

There's probably a reason companies like Zynga have been having huge problems. If you make a living off of creating fads; you'd better make sure that you grab a new branch before you let go of the old one.

I'll not include Wii Sports in my list because it's not really a fair comparison, but aside from that probably the Brain Training series. I believe there was one released for the 3DS but no doubt that completely failed to get off the mark.

As others have correctly pointed out, most of the things you'll find will be Wii/DS titles really. No major surprises there.
