Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft’s Phil Spencer Admits the Kinect Isn’t Really That Useful For Core Games

This has been known by anyone who has tested the tech since last gen. The move and Wii had more potential for core games than the Kinect but the lack of quality offerings are the reason why it couldn't be realized.

Kinect sold very well actually.  it sold over 24 million as of 2013 before XBO came out. Did it have the same effect as Wii?  No, nor did I ever say that so not sure why you are bringing that up.

One thing is for certain, my stance surely hasn't changed.

I believe that Motion Controls hurt the reputation of Nintendo and Xbox.  A large portion of the gamers that Motion Controls appealed to were casuals that abandoned the market for mobile games.  On the oppoite spectrum motion controls turned off hardcore gamers that are still here

Considering it significantly improved the reputation of Nintendo by bringing it to the forefront of the industry, after its kid cube, this is obviously wrong.

And now that reputation is gone and worse than ever; how has motion control helped them in the long run? The brightest flame burns quickest, and they have now been forced to scramble to come up with a viable plan for the future since their massive cash-cow was only temporary.

That doesnt relate to what I said.  This does

5 Wii (Wii) 45.37 33.75 12.77 9.28 101.17
22 Wii U (WiiU) 4.41 2.22 2.26 0.60 9.49

1 Kinect Sports X360 2010 Sports Microsoft Game Studios 3.83 1.70 0.03 0.49 6.06
2 Kinect Sports: Season Two X360 2011 Sports Microsoft Game Studios 1.34 0.72 0.02 0.21 2.29
3 Kinect Sports Rivals XOne 2014 Sports Microsoft Game Studios 0.23 0.13 0.02 0.03 0.40

Since when was the Xbox One launch a failure?

Newsflash: Pope admits that the Earth is round!

Just the fact that it took Microsoft 5 years and a failed console launch to realize and admit what everybody else figured out sometime in 2011 just speaks volumes about ineptness of their leadership.

Lucky them they still have Bill Gates Windows legacy to fall back on, as the rest of the company is playing "follow the leader" for quite a while.

It rode off of the back of the Wii's popularity as well.

Erm, you didn't understand.

"MS tried to continue to ride the fading motion craze wave with no real efforts".

They rode the wave with kinect 360 and that worked for them. I didn't question kinect's success during the 360 era.

They tried to continue riding the already fading wave with the X1 and kinect with no real support.. besides the obligatory bundling. Gamers were put off by that, no question.

But how is that comprable to what Nintendo did with the Wii? The Wii was suported with critically acclaimed games. Why would that turn off any gamer? why would that put off the hardcore gamer? and how is this comprable to what MS did?

Your stance makes no sense.

That is not the subject at hand.....

Jay is suggesting that Nintendo's image was hurt by motion controls and the Wii, the same way X1 was hurt by kinect...

No shit, Sherlock.

And I believe they were, after the fact. Mandatory Kinect was always a bad idea and I said as much from the very beginning, I also said that MS would be forced to back out of this decision if they wanted any level of decent sales. I believe they were a little too late though.

Both Nintendo and MS' image has been hurt in the eyes of the core console demographics, which is of course problematic. However; it is unlikely at any rate that this audience is big enough for three companies to make great amounts of money off of them.
