Forums - Sony Discussion - The Last of Us is a good game…nothing more, nothing less

Two years later and this is still a thing? Come on now.

It earned every accolade it achieved, by critics and gamers alike and Naughty Dog is not a one-hit wonder developer, they have a legacy of spectacular games. It isn't overrated.

Oh, so now it's Game of the generation? Didn't know that.

Everyone has their own pick for that title.

But there is no denying the impact that game had on most people who played it. Few games have managed to do this to such acclaim.

For someone that is defending the game so much but doesn't seem to understand why ppl would just be meh about it and call it  overrated, even though you have the answer in your own post, is very wierd.  Although you might be one of those that follow the hype so it might be hard for you to come to terms with it, don't worry I will explain it for you as simple as possible.

@Bolded this is the very reason that all the talk about GOTG and masterpiece is only hype and nothing more, a truly great masterpiece is felt by people that haven't played the game. All the games that should be considered masterpieces and what not would have such an impact that even if you didn't play the game directly you probably played a game that was infuenced by it in someway, those are the only games deserving of those titles.

If you have never played Super mario bros you probably played a game that was influenced by it in someway, if you have never played OOT I'm pretty sure you played a game that took some elements from it, if you have never seen GTA3 there are lots of other games that try to be like it, these are some of the games that truly left an impact on the industry sadly the TLOU doesn't fall into that category.

From what I have played (I do have the game btw I just can't bring myseld to complete it) if I had to explain this game to someone I would say its a solid TPS shooter with some stealth/survival elements if you like those types of games you would probably like this and that's it.

I'm currently playing through TLOU too...and yeah I pretty much agree with the overrated sentiments so far. The best part so far was the opening sequence, which was incredible and had me on the edge of my seat. A lot of the story is above average in quality and the characters are way up there too, but the plot keeps it from being anything special. Zombie apocalypses should take a long ass break for now.

The gameplay I feel is the worst part of the game so far, though the controls are very smooth.

It;s like game has been entrenched with Uncharted's cliches. There are too many instances of everybody helping each other get through rubble, climbing over obstacles and things falling apart. All while interacting with the touch of the triangle button..as if that makes the player feel involved.

Triangles and friendship. Two peas in a pod.

I absolutely loved the opening sequence. Easily one of my favorites, next to the section where Ellie was playable and the ending sequence.

In fact, I think I would've liked the game even more if it had all been like the opening sequence with Sarah. Instead of numerous gunfights, it could've been mostly reliant on exploring environments with limited actions, as well as puzzle solving, and occasional zombie scenarios to break things up. That could've been really interesting. Or really bad. No way to really tell.

I have to wonder if they'll go the same gameplay route and tweak it like how Uncharted 2 did or if they'll completely revamp it. It'll probably be the former given the success and acclaim of the original.

That's cool. 100% your opinion.

My opinion is that the game is a masterpiece.

I also thought Xenoblade and both Mario Galaxy games were mediocre games at best.

Opinions are cool.

Cool story dude. But it's way premature to say TLOU won't have a lasting impact on the industry. And let's be serious here, your definition of what constitutes a masterpiece isn't necessarily the one everyone should go by. You say it's all hype and nothing more. That's utter nonsense. The people who called it GOTG or a masterpiece had to play the game to come out with the strong impression they got. And a lot of those people played the game twice, with the PS4 version, and their opinion didn't change. But yeah, it's all nothing but hype. ¬_¬

As for your jabs at me, I will invite you to read the thread again. I asked for elaborations on certain position people had about the game's ending, and some people couldn't provide any. I don't know what you saw, but never did I contest someone for not thinking the game is the GOTG. I questioned their argument about why they downplay the game. In most cases, you will notice, the user is known to be biased towards a competing console with a history of having a hard time to give credit where credit is due. But since you call the success of such a game on nothing but hype, I know I can't expect any better from you either.

Mad max is amazing you guys should go see it.
OT: I haven't played much of the last of us yet

This guy gets it!

On a side note, I bought TLoU on PS3 in 2013 and just couldn't get into it.  I got it for PS4 and forced myself to stick with it.  It was quite enjoyable but I didn't love it like everybody else.  Same thing with Xenoblade.  Got it for Wii when everybody was going crazy for it but I wasn't feeling it.  I grabbed it for N3DS and I'm enjoying it more but, for the life of me, I can't see what made people love it.  Seems like I'm just passing through areas killing random monsters.  Hope there's more to it.  The story seems kinda thin.

If the Last of Us didn't create any new elements for the gaming industry then it at least perfected the "cinematic" gaming experience the 7th generation of consoles tried to create all throughout its lifespan. Games like Gears of War, Uncharted and Call of Duty tried their best to create a cinematic-centered gameplay feel and it worked out nicely for most AAA games, however this game just set the bar that much higher. Games of today and future generation will try their best to tie in story and gameplay as seemlessly as the Last of Us did.

Also, like a poster above said, the game's been out for just 2 years ago. It might be hard to see the impact this game had on the industry (although in my eyes it's clear as day).

Try to play the game on a harder difficulty mode.

Yeah, I pretty much agree. The gameplay was enjoyable (even if it felt a bit scripted and repetitive at times) and I liked the story. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a good story-driven 3rd-person shooter, but I wouldn't call it "Game of the Generation" or something like that.

It's a good game.
