Forums - Gaming Discussion - Prediction: A stronger Wii U would have won this generation

Yeah I agree. They went for the "casual"gamer market. Got them but lost the hardcore gamers. In the long run it hurt them because console gamers make money games and casual gamers don't buy games as much. Unfotunately they lost more from the Wii U. I wonder if there next console is too late for them.

The concept of the console was gimmicky, and it got no support for multiple reasons. The wii was a fluke in an overall downward trend in nintendo that's lasted 2 decades. I would also like to say that this isn't really a prediction.

Its not just the hardware that is not good for the third party, its also they lack of support from Nintendo to them. Nintendo need to give them dev kits, free marketing and development support like SCE and Xbox division does. Nintendo got an go way of only helping third party that goes exclsuive to them.

Sony's fanbase is quite strong... a stronger Wii U probably wouldn't create a lot of converts. Speaking of converts, I feel like Sony got a few from Microsoft this time around.

Your statement makes it sound like video games are a religion or something, haha.

Even if the wii u had been a huge success as is the third party support would still not be great. The wii was hugely successful but most of the ps3/360 games couldn't be run on it due to its low power. The experiences were often poor for wii conversions and yet the price for the games was as high as 360 and PS3. Very poor value.

It would of been the same situation again this time around with wii u getting poor ports of the latest games that run well on pc, ps4 and xbone. Generally both wii and wii u were only worth buying for Nintendo games and a few other third party exclusives.

Lets not forget that Nintendo have the worst record for dealing with developers and publishers, often their fees are higher, the terms are worse and they generally milk third parties for as much money as possible. Sony in contrast has always been a much fairer player in this area with perhaps Microsoft in the middle.

I think there could have still been issues if Nintendo had bought out a console with a competitive spec that sold well in that some developers may have still considered not porting to wii u especially if the hardware wasn't x86 based and used a different gpu architecture than Radeon.

There is a nice camp now of triple x86 formats, PC, PS4 and xbone which is likely great for developers even if development software is different they know each format is relatively capable and what works on one will work on the other with minor adjustment in graphic detail, resolution etc. If wii u had actually been x86 based that probably would have helped it keep some support.

agree. if Wii U has x86 architecture then 3rd party games can easily port their games, i believe.
sales would be better and may compete more with PS4.

Wii outsold the PS3 and xbox 360. It was the least powerful of them. It had 3rd party support for the most part.

Typically, sony's consoles dominates the console market unless it screws up. The wii's success was most likely a fluke especially if nintendo can't win any other generation against sony. There's nothing to suggest that the wii u would have won this generation if it was more powerful.

So I guess 3DS vs Vita and DS vs PSP didn't happen?

You know damn well that I was not talking about handhelds and that has nothing to do with consoles. Consoles and handhelds are different markets. The only reason why someone brings up handhelds in a discussion about consoles is to defend nintendo's lack of success with consoles. Yes, nintendo is king of handhelds and everyone knows it but it has nothing to do with this.

The biggest issue with a lot of Nintendo fans is that they actually believe that Ninty is the pinnacle of gaming and that they are competitive, even if they got beaten up 3 of 4 times in the last 4 gens by huge margins and won once by a tiny difference. I think that it's clear from the last gens that Nintendo is usually not competitive compared to Sony and MS. They just do 90s consoles in the 2010s.

Probably someone will quote this up and say that GameCube was profitable or some other BS.

Then the price of the console would be far higher due to the tablet making it probably less even less thjn it is now.

Anyway Nintendo didn't get 3rd party support with the powerful GC, and didn't get it with the Wii having excellent sales (but poor hardware). I've read here they provide a very bad development kits (outdated, japanese documentation), they have bad relationship with editors (starting from the snes period with too much fees and exclusivity restrictions), and last but not least... people are not buying 3rd parties on Nintendo systems. About relationships, I mean Miyamoto saying F-Zero GX from Sega didn't deliver, it's kind of rude (that's one of my favorite games all time). I'd like them to expand to others studios and franchises what they did for F-Zero GX, and what they do with platinumgames. Anyway it will be hard for Nintendo to win alone with the increasing development cost, and it's hard to relate that to the hardware power alone.
