As Lurker says, this isnt just carriers, its manufacturers too.

Hallelujah that this has happened. Vodafone can be dog slow at releasing the updates.

PS. Why is quoting suddenly broken on this site via firefox?

Because Firefox is gash? You should use a decent browser, like IE. :)

Can't wait for Microsoft Edge (project spartan) to be out of the alpha/beta stage. Chrome is next on my things to ditch list.

I like Edge, but the lack of TPL support is killing it for me. Plus the fact that it won't navigate 127.0.0.1/localhost addresses.

I would think the carriers would be glad that they don't have to handle it.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

I always assumed that my phone manufacturer offers the updates. Didnt know the carrier does. (I mean I can also update a tablet without having a carrier at all)

This is for the most part good to hear;
I wasn't aware that cell service carriers did -NOT- dictate updates outside of the US.

With that being said, in my particular scenario I've benefited quite a bit with Verizon controlling updates with my latest phone. I currently use the first gen Moto X which is past due to receive the latest firmware update (5.0.1 or something?) but because the architecture is unique to the phone, the update has caused wide spread issues which I've been able to entirely avoid thanks to my carrier.

thats really good. i dont understand why carriers in the US have control of updates. its really really really fucked up.

I get what your saying, I was a Radio Shack Manager for 7 years so I sold a lot of phones and I was in the know for a long time with carrier reps.  VZW is really slow because they mainly do a ton of dumb test and also the new version of the software has to continue to have a ton of their bloat ware.

This is good news.
