Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is Catering To Women, Homosexuality and Minorities Restricting Game Developers' Creative Freedom?

Catering to? Nah, if that's the developers intention then I don't see it as a bad thing. Forcing devs to adhere to your ideology on the other hand, via pressure of any means, however, does.

If a developer doesn't want to make a game that suits your ideology, that should be up to them. It doesn't bother me when they do, it doesn't bother me when they don't. What I do get annoyed with is when a bunch of screeching hipster douches want everyone else to change their creative process to suit them, while providing absolutely nothing of their own (other than incessant screeching).

For the most part, a developer is allowed to put whatever they'd like in a video game. But, as with anything else, they are susceptible to the will of the market.

If a developer alienates a particular group, then they cannot rely on the support from that group.

The recent rise in outrage from these groups comes from them finally having a voice that they didn't before. It should be looked on as a triumph of our society, not a detriment.

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Not really, the shrieking douche's did nothing to deter GTAV being the best selling game of all time.  Which is something developers should take note of.  The professional victim's have little to no actual buying power in the industry, their opinions are the extreme low end of the spectrum, and the evidence they use to back up their claims is pseudo-science at best.  Outright cherry picking lies at worst.

The 'Will of the Market' says GTA's business model wrecks, reality tells us these folks are better at complaining than creating.  So, let them complain, doesn't mean anyone has to listen.

That's pretty much what I'm saying. The people upset over GTA5 didn't buy it, but enough did that it didn't matter.

Like I said, a developer can do pretty much whatever they want. They just need to keep the market in mind.

I think that, considering video games as a form of art and a medium for Free Speech, developers should be allowed to put whatever they want into a game. Removing or altering content in a game because someone doesn't like it would be censorship. If there's something in a video game you don't like, then don't play it. Not everyone is going to cater to what you like or dislike.

And if you're worried about the children seeing bad things in games, then that's what the ratings are for.

Catering to certain demographics, isn't that what the video game industry has been doing since forever?

Note very carefully that I did not call women minorities in the post. Please read carefully before jumping to conclusions.

I agree with your last statement though.

Well, the reason why I mentioned that is because for a while now, I noticed that when people mention minorities in political discussions, they often include women as if they are minority. It's been a growing irritation for me. When I read the OP, your wording reminded me of it and irked me enough to say something about it.

I know the feeling. Understood.

Nope. The Neo-Progressive / SJW backlash against developers who refuse is restricting creative freedom though. Let's hope that this kind of behavior does not become more prevalent.

Thing is, most of us have drank the Kool Aid and now we can't even see that we are being bullied.
