Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne - was that suppose to be a branch or a one-off. If its purpose was to be one off or self contained, how can it be dead?

That is great. Just because you dont like handhelds doest mean DQ9 doesnt exist. That is exactly what is going here. I dont need to read the post. When I see dead JRPG franchise, I expect to see dead ones. Not ones where we arnt satisfied with its destination or direction.

Hey most of the games listed on the OP are dead. You should try not to be so technical with this stuff... If a long time has passed since a proper release (a main release) from a series it's dead.

Then if it gets a new release you can say it was revived.

Ugh, Shadow Hearts 1&2 were amongst the best Jrpg's I've ever played. 3 wasn't to bad either. Its unfortunate the series never really picked up. I dont think launching it just right after FFX was smart either. It went completely overshadowed and unnoticed.

Damn now I'm sad. I want a SH4 or at the very least put the games on PSN.

Two things, I removed the word dead from the topic for the milllionth time. Second Nocturne is the Third Main Shin Megami Tensei Title, number IV is on the DS.

That is not the definition of dead franchide. A dead franchise is one where the developer/publisher has not interest in using or returning too. Or in Shadow Hearts case, no one to continue it.

Shining force is another!
The ironic thing about shining force is it died after releasing its best games shining force 3 part 1, 2 and 3. Brilliant interlocked stories and likeable characters. I'd love a complete remake of Shining force 3s

that would be ephing incredible!!!  I really miss Shining force... And Suikoden... This list makes me sad...

Well you just confirmed what I said. Most of the franchises in the OP are dead by your definition.

I like my definition better though, it keeps things way more simple.

Suikoden was the reason I wanted to do this. Suikoden titles were just so great, and now more than ever with Konami being Konami, it seems less and less likely we will ever get Suikoden 6.

Yeah I wish Atlus brought back Raidou.

When you say Shin Megami Tensei, do you mean mainline?
