18 days to greatest game ever.

...which is not Sonic Mania, of course.

What are you talking about? Splatoon 2 isn't until Summer.

You haven't played Skyward Sword at all? Wow, you're in for a treat.

The game's director is actually the same as Breath of the Wild's (no, Aonuma didn't direct either).

No I never owned a Wii with Motion Plus so I never had the opportunity until now.

Skyward sword doesn't start slow... TP does. and TP is my fave zelda game.

So thanks to your comments I decided to tackle Skyward Sword before TP HD. I finshed WW HD 100% yesterday and I will now share my first impression of Skyward Sword after beeing a few years late to that party. :D

So far I reaced the area deep in the forest.

I will simply cut it into cons, neutrals and pros. Of course this is all my opinion with regards to my experience with gaming and the franchise.

Let´s start with the bad stuff and work up from there:

Cons:

-The handholding. Having played every Zelda title since ALTTP I consider myself fairly adapt at how these games work. Still Skyward Sword took the oppurtunity to stop me all the time and explain in detail how every little move works. For some of these i am thankful but most of them i either knew already or simply figured out by pushing random buttons and sling the Wiimote around like a maniac. This is my most negative point because it just keeps going so far. Phi interrupts me constantly to tell me things like how to switch the aura search even though he showed me the selection wheel in the prior Zelda search. It just annoys me and i try to silence him as fast as possible.

-Following up to this: No text skip. would love to skip through the dialogue I don´t need but sadly thats not possible either.

Neutrals:

-The graphics: this is a neutral point because i know this game is quite a bit old but playing it after the stunning HD version of Wind Waker I cant help it to be a little dissapointed. Still the artstyle itself is really vibrant and colorful and I do like that alot.

-Phi: I like his overall character so far. A very analytical creature and he just seems very interesting to me how he will develop over time. Sadly him acting as my tutorial all the time pushes him to the neutral points because to me he is worse than Navi.

-Motion Controls: Its been a challenge so far. After you get used to it there can be really awesome moments where you slay a group of moblin with fast and precise slashes. But this does not seem to work for me all the time. Sometimes it just does not recognize that i want to change my attack pattern and the damn moblins block every hit. Also I don´t get the timing of my animations just yet. Maybe this point improves over time but at the moment Im neutral towards the MoCo.

And finally the Pros:

-The Setting: A Island in the sky. Bird mounts and the lingering question what awaits below. In combination with the artstyle this game hooked me pretty fast just with its setting.

-The Characters: I was really suprised by this. There are a lot of common tropes going on with these charakters but the execution of those are really great. The people on skypiea ;) really fit into the setting and are just a treat to watch and interact with. Link also is in this point because I just liked him from the start and with the motion controls you really feel like him and with good dialogue options I can cover a lot of things I would say in his situation.

-The Music/Sounddesign: A point that every Zelda game excells and Skyward Sword is no exception. All around great as expected.

-And for my final point.

Zelda: I was not prepared for this, but this iteration of Zelda is my favorite by far! She is just... wow. I was completely overwhelmed by the person she is. Her relationship to Link reminded me of my own relationship to my best friend. She grew on me immediatly and i like every bit about her. Only thing I can wish for, is for her to have more screentime later on in the game because I will be sad if I only chase her for the whole time.

So that was it so far. My first impression with the game. Hopefully this was a somewhat entertaining read. If not please tell me. Also all points are open for discussion.

All in all I now know what you guys were talking about. This game is quite something and im pretty sure I will finish it before the BotW release!

Nice to hear you are enjoying it.  The setting and characters are two of its strongest points.

I can see the graphics being a sticking point.  On the one hand, it is a very distinct, vibrant art style that complements the tone of SS fantastically and is tied with Twilight Princess HD for my second favorite art style, right behind Breath of the Wild.  And I think it is a fantastic use of the Wii's power, achieving a nice level of detail in character models and other meshes as well as nice texture detail that is never distractingly low res and the way it handles LOD saves resources while simultaneously allowing for a true painting-like look.  On the other hand, I feel the standard-def nature of the Wii hurts it more than Wind Waker because those higher polygon models result in more distracting aliasing issues and make the lacking image quality much more noticeable.  Still, on the whole I think it holds up well.  Now that high precision motion control is confirmed for the Switch, I am really, really hopeful for a Skyward Sword HD: new lighting engine + better draw distance and AA with a moderate increase in texture quality would greatly enhance the visuals of the game.

Till Zelda or more importantly the Switch, yes :D

I believe you meant to say that the other way around.

As for you and me, yes Zelda is more important

But for most it would be the Switch :p

Impressive, I have yet to 100% The Wind Waker HD with all the navigating and treasure collecting, let alone the figurines x:

I found the story for Skyward Sword to be good. Not a big fan of going back to the same places again and again, but it wasn't bad and I didn't find it boring because of the twists that happens to the map each time

Music is really good, and there are some really stellar songs in the game

My main issue is, again, the motion controls and the repetitive bosses :/

Definitely a good read and Hopefully you enjoy the rest of the game :p

Damn those are some very steep prices. Where do you live?

Australia, and yeah it can be a little expensive here at times but its also partly my fault for wanting it all day 1 at the midnight launch.
Sometimes you can get games day 1 here for as cheap or even cheaper than the US if you just shop around.
Bought Mario Kart 8 on launch for $52 USD and thats after tax. If I had just gone to EB Games like a casual that doesnt know any better it they would have charged me $76 USD. Because a $24 difference for the same game on launch is totally normal and all -_-
Man EB/Gamestop are the worst (I say as I hand over $1000 to them)

Do you have to buy all the Switch parts separately or is it bundled together and you are giving a breakdown? :p

Still really expensive though, even with conversion :/

Haha no im buying an extra dock so I can be lazy and not move the dock back and forth from bedroom to loungeroom and the pro controller because I want it... also so I have 2 actual controllers to play multiplayer with the lil sis. Decided to buy a stand because Im an idiot maybe, I want to be able to charge the device when its in tabletop (aka in bed) mode but you cant so a seperate stand was needed. Then I realised I could be super lazy and use one of these instead to game in bed with the joycons seperated so the stand was kinda just a waste of money.

Seriously though could gaming get any more comfortable then this?? The split joycons were already a dream for me but then being able to lie down and have the screen above my face so I dont have to strain my neck or anything... The Switch will totally lead to me putting on 200+ pounds, Im never leaving my bed again

It's Fi, not Phi, and she's female... I guess. Being a sword spirit robot thing it's kinda hard to have a say on it. About her character, you will grow to like her more and more, but the handholding will never stop. There will be some moments where you catch a few breaks (particularly inside dungeons, where she barely ever says anything), but most of the time she will be around telling you what to do and how to do it. It's one of the game's biggest flaws, for sure.

Fi sure is great
