It may just be that it's still TP's timeline only they're making it the timeline that takes elements from the others for a middle of the road approach.

I played and finished Mega Man X the other day. Man, they just don't make 'em like they used to, eh?
Digitimes is reporting that NX production is about to have a test run in the third Quarter 2016.
My theory (not part of the article) is that if everything goes well in this run we'l have the announcement soon after.

The real problem is that Capcom didn't know what to do with the IP. They found a successful formula and then repeated it over and over again until everyone stopped caring because it was always the same damn thing. Choose between eight stages, each robot master's weapon is effective vs. another one, proceed to a linear level sequence after the first eight stages, eventually fight all eight robot masters again, final boss. Add that later games featured lamer robot masters, countless variations of already known weapons without offering anything new that was cool, and worse music. That's how they ran classic Mega Man into the ground. Mega Man 9 was welcome after a long break, but Mega Man 10 reminded everyone why they had stopped caring about Mega Man. Not that MM10 was a bad game, but it fell into the same trap of being extremely formulaic. The X series was next generation Mega Man with additional gameplay mechanics. That felt great for the first game. By the second game you already get the feeling that you know where this is going, then the third game just makes you shrug. The Zero series tried to change things up, but it was all for the worse. I only played the first one, but that one was so bad that I didn't even want to try the other ones. The ZX series was an attempt at mixing Mega Man with Metroid, but that felt off for something that is supposed to be straight-forward action. Anyway, people want more Mega Man, but that's mostly because they know that they won't get it, and what you can't have tends to feel more desirable than what you have. If the series was revived, by the time the sequel to the revival came around, everyone would remember why they stopped buying Mega Man. |
I meant in the sense of comparing old video games to modern ones, but your post is still spot on. I think that if the series were to be revived, they'd need to space them out, or incorporate a lot of new ideas. Have you seen the cancelled Maverick Hunter which was being developed by a lot of Metroid Prime people? That looked neat.
