Would I need to see the old movies to enjoy this? I plan on watching them eventually but it'll mean the difference between theater viewing and home viewing

Skip the first if you don't feel like watching all of them - while it's a great movie, Mad Max is usually associated with 2nd movie, Road Warrior - this is pretty much what this new one seems to aim for.

Honestly, I'll watch it, but I'm not expecting much, for me there's only one Max and that's Mel Gibson.

No.  Almost no one had seen the original Mad Max when the second film became a huge hit.  The first film is an 'origins' type and, honestly, it's pretty dull until the action bits at the end.  It explains why he became a wanderer with something of a death wish but it's far from necessary or original.  I mean, do we really need to see Bruce Wayne lose his parents to watch him fight bad guys?  Kind of like that.

He's a drifter character who stumbles his way into an entirely new conflict with each film.

I never watched the originals myself. To be honest never even heard of it until last year, but i may watch this if it is as good as they say

Mad Max 2 intro sequence pretty much tells you everything you need to know.

Fun fact.

Mad Max 1 had a budget of around $640.000
Mad Max 2015 had a budget of $100.000.000

Awesome! My dad was always a big fan of the series, but I was always too scared when seeing the little boy (almost?) get sucked into quicksand when I was no more than 10. Now that I'm cool with death of children in entertainment, I should be okay.

I believe a lot of the high scores are due to its feminist approach and vilification of men.

dat godly 90 meta at 30 reviews and 99% RT with 90 reviews and a score of 9.1, it looks amazing hope you have a blast watching it
