Forums - Politics Discussion - Do You Think That Being Born And Raised in a Non-English Speaking Country Affects You?

Many people may be asking what I'm trying to say with my question in this threads title, so let me explain myself.

I was born and am being raised in a non-english speaking country, therefore my thoughts are usually not in English. This therefore means that when making decisions especially ones which require a fast reaction, I'm usualy slower than native speakers or tend to make more mistakes as my thoughts need to sort of think in my mother language.

If we take this to the internet where dare I say at least 70% of everything online is In English, do you as a non-native speaker of English feel as if you have a disadvantage against native speakers? Do you feel as if it's sometimes like those IQ tests where they tell you that your IQ may be higher, than achieved in that test,  if you mother language isn't English?

Don't worry, I don't think it can affect you as native speakers at times are horrible themselves.

Biggest offenders are those who mistake your and you're.

Not at all. You should get used to it at times. Just start talking to yourself in English, and you'll start thinking in English. At some point, you'll differentiate your English mind and Native mind. In other words, you'll get 2 personalities :D

I know the difference but sometimes I still write your when I mean you're. Lol I hope I didn't make a mistake like that in my OP :P.

It takes something like 5 years of intense study to be truly fluent in another language. I sort of speak Spanish, but when I do it's a very slow process. I definitely couldn't carry on any sort of intelligent conversation in it.

I seem to be doing just that :P, especially ever since I've joined this forum I've been thinking more in English. It's also preety rampant in my country though, especially for students my age, to think in our language and literally translate that into English. I always seem to think that, that will always put them at a disadvantage against native speakers, especially when it comes to a debate or real life argument.

Being born in a non-English speaking country, it does apply to me to an extent. Even if I was exposed to English from an early age, I sometimes falter when trying to communicate with another person thru Skype. I tend to say things which are interpreted inaccurately because I sometimes need to think about the word in Spanish and translate it.

Even still, Puerto Rico does have English as a mandatory class in every school. So thanks to that and the exposure to the English language helped me to be more receptive and adapt to a conversation. Even though I've been told several times that I'm fluent in English, I got a bit rusty as of late.

depends if im drunk or not..

What you're describing is just a natural process on your path to learn another language. Just watch a lot of movies in English with subtitles on, surround yourself mostly with English speakers and possibly read English works as well.
All of this will help you think in English, instead of translating everything into your mother tongue, which is...
