Forums - Sony Discussion - Raiview: Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch

Welcome to my first raiview!

I will be doing these with old to newer games every so often so enjoy!

Spoilers Ahead:

BE STILL MY BEATING HEART!

Ni No Kuni:

Story: The story goes as this. A boy named Oliver went to go try out his friend Phill's new car but crashed into a river and couldnt swim. His Mom comes to save him but after doing so she collaspes and is taken to the hospital where she sadly passes away. Oliver is very upset but by his tears he revives Drippy: Lord of the Fairies and he helps him become a wizard and brings him to his world. Then through that Oliver's Destiny unfolds and has to stop Shadar The Executor from destroying the world. When Oliver gets powerful enough by retrieving Mornstar and opening his heart fully he battles Shadar. Then after defeating Shadar, Cassiopeia, The White Witch, decideds to take actions and unleash her Mana upon the world. Oliver then destorys the mana and heads to her castle to defeat her and the Zodiarchs.

Thoughts: Really great story as it shows how helpful one boy can be. Oliver  always continues to help people as one of the themes of the game and the characters are so memerable like Shadar, Swaine, Drippy, Oliver, etc. The game flowed nicely(unless you wanted to grind like me) and there was plenty to do in the story. The only problem I have with it is the ending since it feels like an ending already used after defeating Shadar which is true since the original ds game made Shadar the main villian and they added the White Witch Story arc with the ps3 version.

Gameplay: Ni No Kuni is pretty much a pokemon, tales crossover. You have your basic 3 Oliver, Esther, Swaine, or later Marcassin but also have creatures known as familiars. You can level up these familiars and evolve them similar to pokemon. They also share a fact that they learn new moves as they level up. Now the battle system is very nice. You fight in a 3d mini arena where you can set up strategy to defeat bosses or regular beasties.

Thoughts: Overall I really love the Gameplay as it made me want to grind for once and I always enjoyed Pokemon and Tales so this is the perfect crossoever for. The battle system is very nice, but I only have one problem, Characters are responsive to all out attack/defense. I had a problem with this especially against Khulan's Nightmare. Esther just wouldnt defend for some reason and try to heal us even when we are already at full hp. Otherwise the gamplay is suberb and a nice blend of both tales and pokemon.

Overall: Ni No Kuni is just amazing. Its gameplay is almost nearly flawless minus the dumb ai. The story is where Ni No Kuni shines though. It is a story that lets you learn of many characters, learn their backstories, actually care for them. Then there is Oliver and Shadar(soulmates)  who are so well done for their stories where you care for them(Shdar's voice is also badass). This a game of the generation when it comes to jrpgs as it does everything right; gameplay, story, character developement(you can clearly see this in Oliver).

This is an awesome game. But I couldn't finish. If Nintendo decides to develop Pokemon for consoles then this should be their benchmark.

The A.I is not dumb

You set them to melee attack only, and use all out attack and all out defense when needed

The a.i. Is pretty awful in this game, hate that you can't switch out tactics during battle.
Glad you enjoyed it though Officer! Hope they make a PS4 game.

You really need to play more games then, especially if you think story is where this game shines of all things.

i still need to play this amazing game!, ive only heard good things of it, the amount of games i still need to play on my PS3 is insane, i could honestly just spend two years or more just beating all the games ive missed and the ones that are still coming out and that is only counting Japanese games, there ares still some western games that i missed and need to play like Tomb Raider, Puppeteer, InFamous 2, Bioshock Infinite, Metro 2033/Last Light and Borderlands 2.
