Forums - Politics Discussion - Are You With Or Against Bird Hunting?

What's the difference between trophy bird hunting and trophy hunting of other animals - including fish? Is it because birds are cute? So long as the species concerned is not endangered then what's the issue? In a lot of cases the species being hunted is a pest, like wild deer, thar and chamois in New Zealand.

I don't know that there should be a distinction between sport hunting and food hunting. Even though I have no interest in hunting myself for any reason I probably would have voted to allow trophy hunting of birds to continue.

Taxidermy of hunting trophies is a hundreds of years old tradition, and if the bird species in question are not endangered I don't see any real issue.

Not compared to all the other stuff we do to animals in our part of the world.

Against hunting period. As humans, we evolve. We hunted animals because we HAD to in order to survive. Now that we don't have that need, I don't see the point.

I'm against hunting/trapping anything, except pedophiles, rapist, and child abusers.

Killing for pleasure,ugh!

While I'm not personally involved with hunting, I know some who are. Now, they do eat their game, but that doesn't mean they don't hunt as a hobby, because that's what it is. But despite that, they don't "kill for fun". From what they've told me, the fun is in everything around it, from just being out in the wild trying to track them (not birds lol) to following those tracks and finding them, to getting in the right position, and then get what you were after (the prey). They certainly don't kill for pleasure, that would be if they were placed at a gun aimed at a bird, without anything of the build up I wrote about previously, pulled the trigger, and found that simple act pleasurable. Guess what; they don't.

Birds are not fair prey.

Against any kind of "sport" hunting. That's just, wrong.

I'm now filled with determination.

In alot of cities seagulls & pigeons are a problem.
Theres too many of them and they are noisy & sh*t everywhere, can cause damage to things.

Seagulls & pigeons are known to actually swoop in, steal food from your hand (say if your carrying a sandwhich) and fly off, they can "beg" for food and be annouying (in groups) (can be hard to walk anywhere if your surrounded by pigeons). They can jump up on tables when your sitting outsides a restuarant and go at your food.

I say have at them.

When there are too many animals around and they become a pest/bother reduceing their population is fine.

I feel like if there is too many of 1 type of animal and they become a pest, or disrupt the eco - system, you SHOULD hunt them.

Its just for everyones benefit.

Im 50/50 on the hunting something just for sport.

I feel like if you want to eat something you shoot yourself, you should be allowed to. How can you keep track of if someone is actually doing 1 or the other?

I think it really changes depending on the bird and need. Like in the states we have a bird called a Grackle that is a much of a problem here as the Rabbit as been for Australia. It's not a native bird and was released by people who wanted The Birds of William Shakespeare' here in North America.

They don't belong here, have reproduced like crazy, are obnoxiously noisy, mess up things and have severely damaged many native bird populations. About a decade ago some company started shooting the ones on a golf course and a bunch of people started protesting and shut them down. It's not just about the grackle, but also some of the native birds are needed to help distribute seeds in the forest. With out those trees being spread, animals can't live there that need them, animals too start dying out ect., etc. It's a complex ecosystem and those birds are messing it up. So I'm ok with removing them.

Or some people eat them. But just to kill something that advanced for fun? That's rather messed up.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Tell me a funny joke!

@Zappykins

Yes invasive species that can wreck the ecosystem should be hunted, bird or not.
Thanks for posting your post btw.

Just to remind all those people against hunting birds, that there can be many benefits to doing so as well.
You cant just proclaim all bird hunting bad, obviously theres times when its called for and the best thing for the eco system and wild life to do so.
