Phil Spencer:  "We Haven't Announced Hololens as Xbox Accessory." "Standalone Device"

The Xbox division boss commented that while an Xbox One/HoloLens union could happen somewhere down the line, the real aim was to make the device a viable piece of tech in its own right. “The tethered scenarios around VR I think are interesting, but we were going for something different. Not being tethered to either a PC, Xbox or a phone as part of the solution was one of our design challenges for HoloLens, and we did that.”

“Well, we haven’t announced it as an Xbox accessory, but it sits within one team, and we have the conversations,” said Spencer in a recent interview with Edge. “Right now, we want to focus on a standalone, untethered device and make sure that we can prove out that scenario.”

Spencer added that should HoloLens come to Xbox, developers will definitely see the benefits of using the VR tech in certain scenarios. “Now we can say, ‘Well, OK, if I do have an Xbox or a PC, what are those scenarios?’ We haven’t publicly talked about what those are, but you can imagine, as we continue to drive and get success with HoloLens, those scenarios will become obvious and developers will take advantage of them.”

Translation: We hope to make more money in the professional sector as a premium high cost device.

Translation: We don't know what games will actually work with this, it will be as limited as Kinect games.

I've been following it for a while.
Seems suited for working together on projects, very valuable in the medical field, training applications, 3D modelling.
Seems less suited to gaming due to the narrow fov and most likely higher cost of the device compared to vr.

They can always make a high powered professional version and a cheap toy version of course.

"Microsoft’s HoloLens headset may well be making waves with its potential uses with Windows 10 and games such as Minecraft, but what of a possible future marriage with Xbox One? Xbox division and Microsoft studios head Phil Spencer has revealed the idea of bringing HoloLens to Microsoft’s current-gen console is still very much a consideration.

The Xbox division boss commented that while an Xbox One/HoloLens union could happen somewhere down the line, the real aim was to make the device a viable piece of tech in its own right. “The tethered scenarios around VR I think are interesting, but we were going for something different. Sounds like MS isn't really thinking of the xbox one as a go to system to use Hololens and they likey don't have any 1st party AAA games for it on the xbox one. Hmm. I could see that being the better move though to see how it plays out on pc before supporting the tech with expensive IP's. I think hololens is better suited for PC.

I can agree with this.

And what would holo lens do? You would have to look away from the tv to see the holograms due to the narrow fov. It won't work like Illumiroom. That kinda makes any games that use both tv and hololens gimmicks.

You can ofcourse play any game on hololens using it as a tv, yet what's the point?

So you're left to specially build games that play in the environment you have to scan all the time to follow what's going on. That really only makes it suited to simple games that play out right in front of you.
It will still be very cool to play Sega's time traveller on your table or any fighting game.
Captain Toad's treasure tracker like games would work. Tumble or other block stacking puzzle games.
Yet full immersive open world games, the games people keep coming back to, are not suited to it.

Seems like the right direction, now make it work with the Ps4 (and any other non-Microsoft's proprietaries) and it will sell like gangbusters.

Well, that's good. I was half expecting another Kinect scenario.
