Nintendo will soon release a new console, the writing is on the wall. And nintendo was never known to support their last gen console after the new console is released, see the wii.

But what if I look at the NES?

Or the GBA.

2015 - 3.2M
2016 - 2.3M
2017 - 900k
2018 - 400k
2019 - 200k

I think the reasons are:

1) The Xbox1 and PS4(especially) have gained traction and will continue to gain even more traction over the next few years as the prime exclusives come to fruition

2) The Wii U is losing third party support, Zelda U has been delayed, most of Nintendo's primary franchises have already been released(except Metroid and F-Zero really).

3) The Wii U's price is not too far off the technologically superior Xbox1 especially when you factor in the free bundled games. Without the worldwide phenomenon like the Wii motion controls, very few people would choose the much weaker system with less third party games(COD, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, FIFA, etc) when a much more powerful machine has those games and is only maybe $20 more in a bundle.

4) If Sony and Microsoft drop the price of their consoles this year, sales of the Wii U will decline even further.

NX was already teased, Wii U will be dead in 1-2 years imo.
I agree with you, 20M isn't a miracle for Wii U but it is very very hard to reach. I guess 16-18M lifetime for Wii U.

And NX is mroe than likely a Handheld sooo you have no point right now

I used to think that reaching N64 numbers would be achievable for Wii U... used to!

You can't really compare GC with Wii U.
Nowdays, even being on the market for almost 10 years, both the XB360 and PS3 still have a price tag between 150 and 200€ (didn't check the US market) when they could easily get the price down to 99€. But they won't: profits and recouping losses being the reason.

Wii U still has to fully recoup it's R&D and losses suffered until last year.
Going below 200€ just won't be an option for Wii U when the console is still selling so low.

Can the console last the usual 5 years?
I highly doubt that can happen. And if it can't, then it will really be a miracle if they even reach GC's numbers.
They don't have the 3rd party support that the GC had to offset the lack of 1st party games when Nintendo starts developing for next gen; sales are so low that when they start going down, retailers will probably react like they did in 2013 (low support meant small orders and return of inventory).

If E3 this year you don't see the a good number of titles for next year, like you saw last year, in regard to 2015, than you can bet that support for Wii U has entered the phase of decline.
Less support = less reasons to buy Wii U.

2) ok

3) Wii U have lose the third party support by 2013...

1 and 4) Ok, PS4, but why XBO??? XBO have already 150$ pricedrop, and it is down YOY... another pricedrop for XBO will NOTHING.

I included the Xbox1 to be unbiased and also because it does have 'some' traction in the US and UK(to a lesser extent). I think once Halo5, Quantum Break come out there will be more interest in the Xbox1 at least in the short term. I do think the PS4 will own this generation by a large margin though.

The only way they break 20 million will be if they drop the gamepad from the bundle, put a Pro controller in its place, and drop the price to $99. Then make the gamepad a peripheral you can buy from the Nintendo site for $99. It would boost sales in a big way, but it would lead to games that can't be played. Even then people will still complain because they need to buy a external hdd for it.

It's an unappealing piece of hardware that is almost exclusively marketed to children an young adults in a world were COD and GTA5 are the chart toppers and they refuse to embrace 3rd party or take a different approach than just Mario and friends. I can guarantee more mario and friends on this new nx system and the cycle repeats itself
