So a very expensive peripheral being partly directed at gaming (despite obvious practical limitations to its integration) with marketing that is highly misleading about it's capabilities. Now where have we heard this song before?

^ this.

And the most important part:  " ....partly directed at gaming (despite obvious practical limitations to its integration)".

AR is going to suck for gameing, plane and simple, when compaired to VR.

And VR is going to be easy to develop for (compaired to AR) and cheaper 249-299$ price tag for a VR headset.

I dont see how this product ever really takes off and takes the world by storm.

Even Facebook, leader of social media choose to buy a VR company

(instead of going for AR which is uniquely suited for social media).

For now VR is the more affordable one and it is supported by many company such as HTC, Valve, and SONY and even Samsung. It will take time to make AR like the Ad they showed and especially to make the price afordable for the targeted market. And also Microsoft need a compatitor to support AR potential market.

The reason there are competitors for VR is because everyone in the industry sees the writeing on the wall.
The time is now, the technology makes it possible to market a product that will take off big.

Its why there are so many developeing it now.
Its the same reason why there arnt alot of people doing AR atm (its too early for it).

I think (1st gen) Hololense will end up a flop.

well on my first impression was , "OMG this will be a game changer" , but then again i remember " Kinnect " so yeah, i pool back my expectation. and then i still have hopes, but after read this news and review along with other first impression, OK i am done with Hollo lens, not now not even on 10 years, but maybe it need more then 10 years

By then, someone (probably MS) will have no glasses holographic tech.

Maybe if Microsoft has more competitor.  Just look at Nintendo VR, It doesnt have competitor and it ended bad and we have to wait more then 10 years  to come close to what Gunpei Yoko vision.  Current VR  is backed by many competitor (Oculus, Samsung, HTC, Valve, SONY ect). That's really helpfull.

Google and Qualcomm also entered AR when they invested in startup Magic Leap. Their demo vid/ad looks just as insane as the Holo Lens ad:

Demo? no thats a fully CGI mock up of the proof of concept (there is nothing physcally being demostrated there).

Basically its like wishfull thinking of how it could be one day in the far far future..... rendered in CGI.

I read a lot of impressions and many were really positive about it.
That said, I really like the idea of holo and although we are very far away of it, imagining we get something like a holo deck like in Star Trek makes me feel enthusiastic about the project.
But I don't think it will change a lot of things in gaming, this is a far broader technology than just a tech for gaming. I believe VR will be the next hype thing in gaming but I have yet to see or feel how it will be better for gaming.

Yeah, that's what I meant. These guys were in stealth mode until recently so it'd be interesting to see what they come out with. They do say they're playing the game in the office but who knows what form that's in.

A lot of mad people here :)

So what about all the other very positive impressions/previews about Hololens?

I think it is kind of expected that some people find issues with it (or even does not like the way it is working like the view field) but Microsoft has a vision for it and they are doing their best for that, this will be a first iteration and again based on multiple reviews/impressions it does not look "terrible" at all or "basically a lie"...

AR needs to be full FoV to work well, If you're only seeing part of an object when the object is still well withing your field of vision, and even still somewhat withing your focal area then it's use is limited. It will still be excellent for 3D modelling on a small scale, but until FoV gets considerably widened it won't be able to be used to look at holographic builds of large scale projects.

It's a good start.

“The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.” - Bertrand Russell

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace."

Jimi Hendrix

So it works well with small objects as long as you're not too close and can interact with air taps and voice control.
Not a lot of gaming potential. Impressive tech anyway.

Yeah that dat camera is the real hololens, if some day all that fit to a small head device will be aweosome, for now is just a kinect on your head. Why they try to lie? they damage the own creation like kinect. The techologyt is very cool but tell us for onces is not ready yet!

That seems really comfortable.
