As a tech geek, I'm still going to get it.

Wait a minute. Who is this marketed toward?

In this day and age, with the Internet, ignorance is a choice! And they're still choosing Ignorance! - Dr. Filthy Frank

I doubt it will cost more than the console itself. MS knows there's no point in an AR peripheral device with too high of a price point. The price needs to be cheap in order to compete with VR offerings.

But it won't. Personally I think they should make  a dumb down "hololense" for Xbox in the 300-400$ range. While the actuall hololense can be around 800-1000$.

Both versions are too damn expensive. It can't cost more than a console or a good pc. It won't sell that well and it'll just be niche. It needs to appeal to as many people as possible. Those prices are too expensive for that to happen.

^Please stop thinking Hololens is for Xbox only, it will expensive and it's not tie-in with Xbox.

Then it cannot be hololense, it has to be a VR headset.  Microsoft isn't going to lose 800$ per sale just to make it to the mass market. Its going to be niche for a long time, and its probably going to be almost a 1000$.

Title of the thread:  MS Exec says HoloLense will cost more than a Xbox.

People are predicting a 800-1200$ price tag in this thread.

Your probably going to need a "pc" box that handles all the physics & compute needed to be analysed by kinect, so you dont slow down the Xbox unnessarly.

Basically if you have your xbox 1 do all the compute, what the AR is going to be capable of is probably going to be limited.

So you off-load that stressed workload to a additional unit you hookup to your xbox.

Its not going to be cheap to get AR.

Unless this unnamed MS Exec is named, I'll treat it just as a rumor. It's more logical to sell the hololens for a lot cheaper to get it into as many homes as possible to become a mainstream hit.
