Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft Exec Says Hololense Will Cost More than Xbox

JRPGfan said:

Yep I ll be surprised if we see Hololense under 700$.

Kinect + PC with strong GPU  + Glasses + software.

I just dont see it being cheap in anyway.
Its funktions at launch are going to be extremly limited as well.

Meanwhile I can see VR set morpheus work just with a PS4.
Plug in and buy a game, and play VR games at probably under 350$ for one of those.

Isn't PS camera required for Morpheus..

This can't be seen as something for the gaming industry, mainstream won't be able to afford it.

(I hope it flops in this space, xbox division is better doing normal games)

Why do people still think this is mainly for Xbox

^ this.

I dont think Xbox is strong enough to power both the AR system needed, and still play games.

My guess is you need a stand alone box, that handles the compute needed for the AR, that then hooks up to the Xbox one.

I cant think why, you would need a camra to watch you, while you wear a VR headset.

Maybe there is a reason for it, but unless its for oddball stuff like useing hand gestures for certain games...... dont see the reason for it.

You should be able to just use a VR headset + your normal controllers, for most VR games.

It was pretty obvious

Too expensive and pretty useless :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfC8RoQcez0

That doesnt say much. If things keep going the way they are for the xbox one by the time hololens releases xb1 will be priced at 75 bucks :-p

I kid, i kid

Well, considering what it can do, I would expect the cost.
Honestly, I'm ready to shell out anywhere up to ~$500 for the device.

I think it's too track head movement, hence the lights on the device.

It makes sense, unlike Morpheus or Oculus. The HoloLens is supposed to be powered by internal hardware.

The question is. Which model do we prefer?

Option 1) As cheap as possible and powered by external hardware - or - Option 2) Really expensive but independent

It can't cost that much if they ever want it to be more than a super niche product. It's fine if that's what they're going for, but niche products also tend to get less support.
My personal opinion about hololens is that it might be cool, but it also might super gimmicky.
