Forums - Gaming Discussion - ESPN Radio Host Slams Competitive Gaming

"If ESPN ever forced me to cover that, or do play-by-play, I would quit," Cowherd said during his radio show. He supplemented his comments with splices of commentary from the Heroes of the Storm tournament last night.

"Somebody lock the basement door at mom's house, and don't let 'em out," he added, referencing the players. "I will quit this network if I am every asked to cover that."

Cowherd went on to say that he "tolerated" Donkey Kong, but stopped caring about fantasy worlds after theHarry Potter series.

Also during his show, Cowherd aired a play-by-play segment where commentators talked about a sequence in the Heroes of the Storm tournament that they said was the equivalent of going up for a slam dunk in basketball without having control of the ball. Cowherd didn't hold back in his comeback for this, too.

"I'll tell what that was the equivalent of there--me putting a gun in my mouth and having to listen to that," he said.

Thats a bit dramatic :P

Colin is very over the top most of the time, so what he said isn't surprising.

I think it's a good thing for gaming events to be on espn. haha. Regular sports are so fuckin' boring.

What a narrow minded way of thinking

The "personalities" are why I haven't watched anything outside of live sports on ESPN for a decade.

People in sports journalism tend to be older and scared of the new. The real fear is having to learn and adapt to readers or viewers taste rather than preaching and converting others to their views. This was really apparent in print media before they mostly faded away.

i'm all for competitive gaming and would maybe even watch it. ..but it's not a "sport" in the same sense as football, soccer, hockey, ect.

by that i mean it is a very different audience and probably doesn't belong on espn specifically.

...then again they do cover poker..

Video games should never be seen as a sport. But the guy is a jerk, plain and simple.

i agree.  Maybe have a seperate channel for it.  It does take a lot of practice, involves skill, and use of your mind, but i think of sports as a physical activity that involves athleticism

I think he could have said that a little nicer.
