Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Call of Duty Black Ops III Run at 1080p on Xbox One/PS4

4K on PS4, 720P on Xbox1 :P

In reality it will probably be something like 1080P on PS4 and either 900P on X1 or that weird non-native 1440 x 1080P resolution like Far Cry 4(instead of a true 1920 x 1080P).

It's called anamorphic aspect ratio.

What about Wii U?

I see. Why 1440 though? Do some monitors display in that resolution? Or do the pixels fit into 1440 better than say 1500? I don't know too much about this topic.

If there is a Wii U version, it will probably be 720p like black ops 2 but first the game need to be announced for it.

1440X1080 is 4:3 aspect ratio in HD. It's how shows and the like dealt with widescreen. DVD's do this, for example. It's mainly came about to deal with NTSC and PAL formats, for CRT TV sets. Also, it was used on film. Film has a preset size limit.

No one was gonna redesign cameras for the widescreen format, invented in the 50's. So they made lenses that did the work. And they squished the image into the 4:3 frame. But it also reduces size. Which is where it comes in handy for games. Less processing power needed to render the screen. But it's also 1080p. Just the pixels are stretched with wise back out to 16:9. You lose sharpness in the process. This is where the res bitching comes in play.

Perfect example: Put your console into 480p. Run it in 16:9 mode. But put your TV into 4:3. The menu is sharper. Than put it back to 16:9. It loses its sharpness. The menu is orginally rendered in 4:3 squished aspect.

Oh wow, very interesting to know. Thanks for that.

No problem. People get really way too crazy over this. You're not losing much, with the sharpness drop.

PS4, obviously. I'm sure, like AW, the XB1 version will have too, but to a limited extent. Like 1080p for MP, but only 1080p for calmer moments in the SP. Never really understood how that works...

Adaptive resolution, in calm subdue moments in the SP it's 1920x1080 but in other areas it's 1360x1080. It's also 1360x1080 on the multiplayer and stays like that.

I always thought that, that was a good idea. Look as good as possible in areas where you can and then take it down in areas where frame rate takes a bad hit. (Blighttown from Dark Souls comes to mind XD)
