So many In here dont understand logic. Software can make as big of a difference as Hardware. Xbox One is a car that's untuned and its trying to keep up with there opposition which is pedal to metal. More horses is important but it comes down to efficiency and optimization. You dont need more horses to have better looking games, if they can optimize there hardware better then they will have better looking games.

A Skyline GTR has less cylinders and horses compared to many other supercars yet its just as quick if not quicker.

The PS4 has and will always maintain a very small real world graphical advantage over the Xbox One, almost indiscernable outside of side-by-side comparisons.

Xbox One games moving to 1080p might make a small difference even smaller, but it will never 'close the gap' entirely.

At Xbox One's launch the resolution divide between it and the PS4 was wide.

Some launch PS4 games had double the resolution of the Xbox One counterparts. Those early figures had a very big impact on how the two consoles were viewed from the perspective of hardware superiority, and as the surveys suggest, this fact led directly to PS4 sales.

But Microsoft promised that things would improve...and they delivered. Destiny, Diablo 3, Tomb Raider DE, GTA 5 and many other games achieved 1080p resolution parity with PS4. The Xbox faithful were extatic and Playstation fanboys were disillusioned...

Is it true? Is the Xbox One truly on par with PS4?

Speaking strictly from a resolution(not framerate) point of view, one has to consider what type of devices video game consoles are. Consoles are gaming devices aimed at the general public, intending to be played on television sets.

99% of all HDTVs are either 720p or 1080p.

So in theory, there is simply no need to waste hardware resources on resolutions above 1080p when developing console games.

What does this fact suggest?

It suggests that in console development, even though the console was able to output resolutions above 1080p, the developers would simply cap it off and use the extra gpu resources for other things. It would also suggest that if the PS4 hardware is continually being improved, resolution would not necessarily be a reliable indicator of this improvement since the PS4 reached the resolution cap so early in it's lifespan.

The Xbox One on the other hand had not(generally) reached this resolution cap in its launch period. Therefore, one could more reliably use resolution to analyse the hardware improvements on Microsoft's console.

Based on these facts, I do not believe that Xbox One games achieving 1080p resolution indicates hardware parity.  This is because we will never know if the PS4 can output resolutions higher than 1080p.

Agree or disagree? Speak your mind.

All the games you have listed are pretty much ports of old gen, even destiny is a last gen game in many ways. And tombraider was on both 1080p but the ps4 version was 60fps.

The ps4 is more powerfull, not only has it a stronger gpu but also gddr5 ram and an extra arm cpu with 256 mb ram to support the OS. Thats all physical stuff you cant add to the X1 with an update.

Drivers aside, the Xbox One simply doesn't have the hardware. Microsoft put too many eggs in their Kinect basket and under developed the actual machine.

Xbox One might be able to hit 1080p/30fps on all of its games, but that would only stand to reason that PS4 could do it at 60fps.

No, latest example are Witcher and Project Cars, bought are 900p on Xbox One and 1080p on PS4.

It seems 900p is now standard for multiplatform Xbox One games.

There's something that needs to be wrote somewhere and permanently stay there.

Tthe hardware of the PS4 is better, and will always be, always.

The consoles are not bound to be upgraded because they can't recall millions of them. What happens is software upgrades, and so far both Sony and Microsoft have been doing them. So as long as they both upgrade the software, the hardware difference will still be there.

Final answer : no, they were never on par and never will. The games on X1 have been better visually, but never will they be on par. (if a developper decides to make a game look the same on both consoles, it just means they're using the X1 as a base and the PS4 is not fully exploited).

I'm sure PS4 has one game that renders internally at a resolution higher than 1080p, but I don't know what it is, it's not a big game I think, but I remember reading about it on digital foundry.

You may be referring to Child of light.
