Forums - Gaming Discussion - Do 1080p Xbox One Games Indicate That Xbox is Now on Par With PS4?

Will Xbox One ever reach parity with PS4?

Yes 42 6.93%

No 492 81.19%

Who cares, I have a high end PC 30 4.95%

It's about framerate not resolution 42 6.93%

Total:606

At Xbox One's launch the resolution divide between it and the PS4 was wide.

Some launch PS4 games had double the resolution of the Xbox One counterparts. Those early figures had a very big impact on how the two consoles were viewed from the perspective of hardware superiority, and as the surveys suggest, this fact led directly to PS4 sales.

But Microsoft promised that things would improve...and they delivered. Destiny, Diablo 3, Tomb Raider DE, GTA 5 and many other games achieved 1080p resolution parity with PS4. The Xbox faithful were extatic and Playstation fanboys were disillusioned...

Is it true? Is the Xbox One truly on par with PS4?

Speaking strictly from a resolution(not framerate) point of view, one has to consider what type of devices video game consoles are. Consoles are gaming devices aimed at the general public, intending to be played on television sets.

99% of all HDTVs are either 720p or 1080p.

So in theory, there is simply no need to waste hardware resources on resolutions above 1080p when developing console games.

What does this fact suggest?

It suggests that in console development, even though the console was able to output resolutions above 1080p, the developers would simply cap it off and use the extra gpu resources for other things. It would also suggest that if the PS4 hardware is continually being improved, resolution would not necessarily be a reliable indicator of this improvement since the PS4 reached the resolution cap so early in it's lifespan.

The Xbox One on the other hand had not(generally) reached this resolution cap in its launch period. Therefore, one could more reliably use resolution to analyse the hardware improvements on Microsoft's console.

Based on these facts, I do not believe that Xbox One games achieving 1080p resolution indicates hardware parity.  This is because we will never know if the PS4 can output resolutions higher than 1080p.

Agree or disagree? Speak your mind.

NO, they will never be on par unless the developer intentionally gymps the PS4 version.

no, and it never will be.

No because there are still games like The Witcher 3 which are 900p on Xbox and 1080p on PS4. However, I don't think it really matters which one looks slightly better unless the game is a buggy mess on one platform.

Neither console would honestly be capable of > 1080p resolutions for many games anyway. Even the PS4 struggles with 1080p in certain games.

no. and it will never be

Ltd predictions by the time 9th Gen comes out

Ps4:110million

Xbox one :75 million( was 65)

Wii u: 20 milliion

Why do people still don't understand it is a hardware issue and not a software issue? :/

It will never happen. The only reason it is "on par" in some games is due to either developer lazyness or parity or moneyhat or various other things but certainly not cause the x1 is on par with the ps4

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

You just cant erase the GPU horsepower difference between these two. No matter how many dev kits Xbox One gets it wont change power difference. PS4 will always be more powerful and easy to develop. If you like to play with powers play in PC. Problem solved.

but but MS promissed infinite power from the cloud ?!

@TOPIC:

PS4 is constantly improving their drivers as well, only difference is they don't scream and shout about it. There will always be a gap between the two, unless microsoft pulls their cloud game in for reals and somehow manages to gt a working system
