I specifically wrote Jan 3rd to March 21st though, compared to the same period last year, and it's down for that period yoy. I don't know you'd change the dates; I'm looking at all the available numbers we have and comparing the same time period from last year. I suppose one could argue that the Feb launch in Japan would skew the numbers in 2014's favor, but that would be wrong due to the fact that Jan is a strong month in Japan and the 5-6 weeks with zero sales more or less make up for the bigger launch numbers, it may perhaps be a disadvantage even. Cutting the comparison short at March 1st seems kinda arbitrary unless one is vocally opposed to the idea that a market leader can be down entering its second full CY.

My whole point, regardless of what time window we choose or not; if the One being down is bad then it is certainly not good for the market leader to be down as well, or even flat, this is only the second full calendar year we're approaching and consoles normally show decent levels of growth at this point in time.

Well, I can't go to March 21st when Sony's official sold-through numbers only go up to March 1st

Fair enough, but are we to discount entirely the numbers of the sales site we're currently browsing and using? I'm comparing last year's vgchartz numbers to this year's, to be clear, and these show it to be down. Unless there's a serious case of undertracking, even official numbers probably won't show much other than being flat yoy as a likely best case scenario so my point still stands imo.

There was a lot of mistrust in the numbers during the holidays and they proved to be wrong, but the PS4 was actually overtracked, much to the shock and dismay of the "undertracked" crowd on the forums...

We can wait for official numbers, sure, but I think they'll be telling pretty much the same story.

I personally don't like using VGC's numbers, so apologies for not clarifying earlier that I was using Sony's numbers. I expect PS4 numbers to be relatively flat YOY by the end of March considering March NPD's results.

PS4 still has the same entry price. The XBO does not. Major difference.

But ps4 had Bloodborne and The Order plus Japan for the full three months.  So essentially ps4 did terrible as well.

Full 3 months?  Could have sworn one released in Feb and the other in March.  And last year, the PS4 still had pent up demand from being supply constrained from the previous Dec AND had Infamous: SS.  Plus, Sony hasn't released numbers, so how do you know it is down YOY?

@ OP

It is bad.  Not only is the XBO $150 cheaper, but it also comes with 2 free games as standard.  It should have been able to make up for a slight drop in 360 sales.

It doesn't come with 2 free games as "standard".

I know there are bundles, and probably even easily available online, but locally in a 3 college town I haven't seen anything other than the generic non-Kinect SKU since Christmas. Not even one Halo bundle. Doesn't seem too "standard" to me.

As for the numbers, meh, everyone is down.

When they constantly need to be adjusted...yes?  Also, from official numbers, it is up YOY so far.  Why take VGC's numbers over official Sony numbers?

poll result:
1) Bad
2) ok
3) meh
4) DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
5) Horrible
6) Very good

between meh and okay
would go with meh, because of the nice entry pricepoint and more (even if small) marktes. in that case a little 10% increse yoy should be the goal

1.6m with 1.1m xbox one is meh
1.8m with 1.3m xbox one would be okay

Around meh to not good. Being in more countries + $150 price reduction havent done much for the console.

So how is that meh at all?  LOL to me that sounds god awful.

Flat or down yoy?

Bad... no other word can explain that.

Titanfall last year, that's at least one factor.

And like I mentioned in the post above yours; the PS4 is also down yoy, or flat at best, isn't that also bad, especially for a market leader going into only its second full CY? Seems like the overall market is just, well; bad.

well, it was down 100k based on the last released numbers (from jan to end of Feb). and that was considering it had a launch in japan. excluding japan the PS4 was actually up slightly YoY. it also retains the same price it had for the past 18 months. another thing is that its sales, even if flat, up slightly or even down slighty YoY are still considerably high, unlike the XB1. The XB1 is 30% cheaper, has had games bundled since the start of the year, and has a better software line up in general since last year.

Edit: Also, PS4's first 3 months last year benefited greatly from the shortages that happened during launch. there were still lines in the streets infront of being formed in january if i remembered correctly

Yeah it's pretty bad considering it's a combined platform number and the price drops and promotions X1 has had. I had expected it though with the over stuffing of the channel MS did through the holidays.
