Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Help me pick my first actual Wii U game ( back story included )

Hello all, this is my first post on VGcharts, but I visit daily for figures and some forums posts :0

So, last year I bought a Wii U because I am a crazy impulse buyer, I got the Wii U windwalker elite console with the game, also bought some old Wii remotes and rumble expansio packs and such, total cost of just over £300, but the thing is I never play it and I regret that, one of the only reasons I bought it was because I checked game's on ebay, and I could buy digital codes on ebay for loads of games really cheap, but they have all disappeared now..

I played wind walker ( I had already played on the game cube before ) and I also bought myself monster hunter 3 ultimate and I sunk 20-30 hours into it and I have no desire to go back due to not liking the controls. I also bought a rayman legends, that I think is really cool but yet again, I hate that half the time I have to control the game using the touch screen for that fly dude lol. I also bought funky barn for some strage reason lol..

Anyway, I realised that the games I have actually played I have had before on previous consoles or are just remastered games... So I feel, I have yet to actually experience any real Wii U game, or for that matter any real nintendo exclusive, I have owned a gameboy / gameboy advance before mainly for pokemon, and I also had a game cube, best game luigi's mansion :) but I have never really played any true nintendo games apart from wind walker.

I am a massive sony gamer, and I despise anything xbox related and nintendo games are always the one I look at from a distance and say I want that but I don't want to spend the money lol.

I need some help picking up a game for the Wii U that I can enjoy, but also has long lasting apeal as I won't be buying any more for a long time ( have massive back log of PC / PS3 / PS4 games to play as long as new releases coming ) and also, nintendo games are really expensive.

So I have had a look at some games, and I have compiled a list of what I think I may like, but my concerns about each one, I am hoping someone can help me choose my first real Wii U game or give me some suggestions I my have missed. I will point out, I am not interested in smash bro's or mario cart, not really my types of games tbh for solo play.

Super mario 3D world - IGN review stated its 15 hours only, and I have never played mario games before as I was never really a massive nintendo fan.

Hyrule warriors - Heard its only 10 hours long, not really played much dynasty warriors games, did play warriors orochi for abit thought it was fun

Bayonetta 1 & 2 - Played first one on ps3, loved it. The only 2 games I know eventually I will buy but waiting as I just played a hack and slash recently

Pikmin 3 - played first one on game cube, really enjoyed it back in the day, not sure if I will still enjoy it as my gaming focus has shifted now.

So thats about it, not a massive list I know, but maybe playing one will change my mind for the others ;)

look forward to some suggestions, thanks for reading and excuse my spelling :)

Super Mario 3D World and Hyrule Warriors have the most content. So one of those two will do you well (unless the musou games are not your thing)

Hello, welcome to VGC.

I think Super Mario 3D World is a great game, and that's what I recommend.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Thanks for welcome :D that's two for mario, how enjoyable are mario games for someone who has never played one? For me demon / dark souls / blood borne are the perfect games, so going from a dark evil world to cute and cuddly makes me think its going to be a hard transaction haha.

I would go for donkey Kong country tropical freeze and hyrule warriors, (hyrule warriors because its actually a couple of hundred hours long if you want to fully experience most of it) . Also super mario 3D world is soo good.

Super Mario 3D World is great, maybe it wasn't the grand 3D Mario adventure the world was waiting for and a linear, more akin to the 2D Mario adventures at that, but it's still the best WiiU game if you asked me. 15 hours is pretty optimistic, maybe if you breeze through it and not bother looking for all the secrets and playing all the levels. I've put about twice that into the game, and I'm not at a 100% yet. Pretty different from the kind of games you describe though obviously, but appearances can be decieving as it's at least a fairly challenging (not too hard though) game and finding all the secrets is satisfying I'd say.

Hyrule Warriors is fun, but it's probably best to be either a Zelda fan, or a Warriors die-hard. 10 hours is true, for the story mode. The game however has a couple other modes which could potentially give you a near endless amount of replayability, among which the Adventure mode, which includes hundreds of levels.

It kind of depends on what kind of gamer you are if "long lasting appeal" if what you're looking for. The obvious answers are MK8 or Smash 4, as they'll last a generation, but they have the same caveat that all multiplayer games face. Once you've raced every track or fought every character, everything you do becomes repetitive, and your enjoyment comes more from who you play than what you play. If you're looking for something to play alone, these are poor choices unless you love the games enough to constantly play online. I do, but as someone without the history, you'll need that multiplayer experience for everything to click.

If you're like me, SM3DW is the best answer, but it also comes with a caveat. If you're the type of person who will finish the game in one sitting, it's not for you in terms of longevity. I got the game at launch, and I still haven't finished it. That's not because it's bad, but because it's nicely designed to be consumable in chunks. I never play more than a few levels at a time before I move onto something else. It's a good "appetizer/time waster" game. It's popcorn. It's like a snack in game form. And it's excellent at doing that. The problem is that it's also very, very well designed, which means that you might think it's so good that you do finish it in just 15 hours because you decided to marathon it.

If you're like me, that won't be an issue, though. There isn't really anything else on the Wii U that fits your description, though. No matter what anyone tries to say, there are gaping holes in the Wii U's library, and the biggest one is a strong single player game one can sink hours upon hours into without feeling like you're wasting time. There's just no game like it on the system yet other than remakes. Xenoblade sounds like the first one. Maybe Splatoon can do it if it's single player campaign is good enough.

Pikmin 3 is a awesome game. I'd either pick it or SM3DW. (since you just played a Hack n' Slash, I suggest waiting a bit before Hyrule Warriors or Bayonetta 2)

Definitely recommend Super Mario 3D World!! It's an excellent game with great game play :)

  • Hyrule Warriors has enough content to last well over a hundred hours. Check out the Official Hyrule Warriors thread if you want some info about the game.
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is great if you want a challenging platformer. Should last at least 20 hours, more if you play time challenges and hardcore mode.
  • I highly recommend Wonderful 101. It has some similarities with Pikmin and is made by Platinum Games. The game is quite lengthy and just like in Bayonetta you can replay levels for that awe-inspiring Pure Platinum trophy.
  • Super Mario 3D World is well worth the money even if you can finish it in "only" 15 hours. Also offers 4-player local multiplayer, which extends the length quite a bit.
  • If you didn't experience the Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Gamecube/Wii you can get it from the eShop. The collection is $20 and well worth the money.
