I dont know if this has already been said but its really simple!.
Handhelds still give japan gamers what they want and thats pure JRPG's, and games like them that the older gen consoles used to give them but no longer do end of story imo .

make'eth the JRPGs, and they shall come to you.

Basically you just need all the big title names on your consol, when it comes to RPGs and you win the japanese market.

If you let them all go to handhelds, your consol sales will suffer.

I wouldn't worry about it, i think we have reached the end of the decline in Japan for consoles and we will see slight increases from here on out. I fully expect PS4 to outsell the PS3(and probably ps3 and x360 combined). So then what's left is the large number of casuals that have left after the Wii. The home console market is about to reach a solid baseline in Japan.

If anything it's the handheld market that i would be worried about. 3DS/Vita could end up with a decline of up to 30%/40% from last gen, and i feel the worst is still to come in that market.

Smartphones and handhelds.

Why would you be worried about the handheld market? You've already decided that the home console market will be fine despite a significant decline, because the casuals don't count. You might as well apply the same reasoning to handhelds.

But more importantly, the handheld market is going to be bigger this generation than the home console market, and it has lower development costs too. The handheld market is clearly healthier.

I'm worried because home console don't have much competition from say tablets and smartphones, handhelds do. And on that part Japan seems to have a somewhat delayed reaction(slower adaption maybe?) compared to the rest of the world, where l the decline of handhelds is much more apparrrent. So i fear there is an even bigger drop incoming for handhelds in Japan.

And the drop is already substantial. 3DS and Vita stand at 22 million combined right know. With alligned launches DS and PSP were already at 34 million.

The reduction of numbers of home consoles games and most of studios in Japan don't do big budget games many games in current gen look like ps2 games

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

I don't understand your logic. If home consoles don't have as much competition, yet are doing even worse than handhelds, then isn't that a worse situation to be in? It means there's really not much demand for home consoles whereas handhelds could come up with new tricks because there is a serious demand for gaming on the go.

Launch-aligned for home consoles, we are down to 4m from something like 10m. I haven't looked up the numbers, but it should be in that ballpark.

Home consoles are doing better than handhelds, only Japan is the exception. So like i explained, i fear a delayed shift in that region.

And on the home consoles, the core business is solid and growing. PS4 is starting to match PS3 and will start outpacing it soon enough. Wii-U is selling ok, and the drop off is solely the casuals moving on from Wii. If you look at less casual games the sold really poorly on Wii if you look at the size of the install base, so that drop off again doesn't influence the core gaming market to much.

As you stated there always will be demand for gaming on the go, however consumers seem to be less and less willing to buy and carry around an extra device for solely this purpose. Nintendo is going to develop for mobile gaming for good reason. The question to me is not what tricks will be pulled out of the hat to make dedicated gaming handhelds more appealing, it's what tricks will show up that make smartphones and tablets more capable gaming devices.

Hm, yeah...

Everything you posted in this thread sounds like a justification that Sony is in the best position going forward.

Not sure how you got that idea? If you mean when it comes to home consoles Sony with PS4 is the only one that will have decent sales in Japan this generation than obviously yes. But when it comes to handhelds Japan is the only market keeping Sony alive.

But what do you expect will happen in Japan in the future then? Do you expect the home console market to shrink even further? And what if you ask yourself the same question for handhelds?

Well i meant ok at best, but they are in line with expectations. I don't think Wii would have faired much better if it wasn't for the motion controls. I was just pointing out that comparing console sales to last gen doesn't make much sense because of the huge difference in sales of Wii and Wii-U, while the first one was mostly sold to casuals.
