Instead, we got a clone, and a character nobody asked for...

However, it's not like they didn't know we wanted Chrom, teasing him in the trailer AND in Robin's Final Smash

If we got Chrom instead of those 2 characters, a lot less people would be complaining. 3 FE reps is good, and that's one less clone in the roster

Wow, if you think nobody wanted Robin.... Chrom was the safe bet.

Lucina was originally an Alt, like Alph but Sakurai decided to make some property differences and add a slot of a character.
Robin is very very unique and is just as popular as Lucina+Chrom of fans in Awakening...

The decision is actually much better than having Chrom...

Edit: People forget about why Lcina/Dr Mario/Dark Pit is in the game. Making them have their own slot because they are slightly different is > being just an Alph!

TBH they could of did this withAlph too. Add in Rock Pikmin instead of Purple and Alph would of been the 50th character. Its just better

Pretty sure Chrom should have replaced Ike. Robin was a cool and unexpected addition and Lucina is essentially a skin for Marth so to bitch about that over a new character is always fucking hilarious.

Ummm Ike is completely unique bro and he is more of the Western FE rep, and unlike many other characters of the franchise, starred in 2 games!

And yes its funny, i dont think evrrybody realizes the clone character being added formula. I rather have Alph as an extra character to make the Roster +1 with him using Rock Pikmin!

Lucina made sense as a clone character, and started as a skin. Little time commitment to add a new character.

As for Robin, he's simply a more interesting character from a gameplay perspective. His magic ability gives more possibilities than Chrom. In Palutena's Guidance for Robin, they explain the thought process.

Ok, let me break it down.

Sakurai wanted a character from Fire Emblem: Awakening, since that was one of the games he played during his free time.

Logically, he considered Chrom at first, as he's the main character of Awakening.

However, Sakurai decided against it, as there wasn't much he could do to differentiate him from coming off as a generic blue-haired swordsman, like Marth and Ike.

Robin was chosen over Chrom, because Robin uses magic, and the fact that we didn't have a Fire Emblem character with magic in Super Smash Bros. allowed Sakurai to easily put Robin in the game without having to differentiate him, as he's radically different from Marth and Ike.

As for Lucina, she was intended to simply be a palette swap for Marth, but ended up being a full-flegded character. Since Lucina is a clone, she took no time to be developed compared to a completely original newcomer like Robin.

Also, I know some may not want to hear this but I am pretty sure Luciana is more popular then Chrom at this point anyway. Not just because she is a clone of Marth (although that definitely helps and makes her easier to add... some would say too easy) but I remember in a number of popularity poll results, Luciana being toward the top. Truth be told, it would be surprising if she doesn't appear in some form or fashion in a future FE game.

Chrom would have probably been too similar to Ika in Sakurais eyes. While Lucina is just a clone she is way more popular than Chrom (what with waifus and all).

Robin is actually the main character of Fire Emblem Awakening AND used magic so would make a very unique fighter in Smash Bros.

Cuz Lucina is a little easier on the eye.

Meanwhile, Robin offers more as a fighter than another Marth-like character.
