Forums - Politics Discussion - Why cant we just have Religion and Atheism live in Harmony?

Honestly, it's really three things:

1. Christianity. Christians are, by nature, recruiters. They want more people to be Christian. That's why there are missionaries and Jehova's Witnesses. They also typically try to force their beliefs as the norm, hence the whole gay marriage thing not simply being an over night decision, but instead a several decade long argument with a brick wall.

2. Islam, for the same reasons as Christianity (though in varying levels of severity). They recruit and force others to follow their rules when able.

3. Atheists. Some of them are a bit too in your face. Okay, a lot of them, though they may justify it through reasons 1 and 2 (which are reasons that have been around much longer, while reason three is in relation to retaliating against it). Atheists need to quit changing everything to be neutral- sometimes it's okay to leave something alone in society, like Christmas or Easter. No one is forcing people to celebrate these, it's just that there are a lot of people who happen to be celebrating them. Atheists also tend to give no quarter to Christians specifically, even though Islam can be just as bad.

Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, and Paganism do to practice in pushing religion. They're fine in my book.

Pretty simple reason. Religions are almost entirely buillt on social privileges and double standards that are never accepted for other kinds of belief system.
When those are removed, along with the political power religions still have, I imagine the atheists will stop moaning.

That's largely already happened in western europe and some places of the US. Other places in the US are pretty terrible. And it hasn't even started happening in the islamic world where you still get killed for simply not conforming.

It depends where you live really, people seem to live in religious harmony where I live. That's my perspective, at least.

more like atheists constantly tell religious people "look how stupid you are"

Because we have a bunch of morons who just can't handle accepting the fact that some people have different opinions, and that's universal to all sides. People who blame other people are the ones at fault.

Had we been able to come together even with our differing opinions, then we would've had far more progress...

If only we looked at what we have in common, instead of our differences...

I do have a personal example. In my class of about 35 people, only 6 people (including me) are religious, and we're always looked down upon by the other guys even though we usually get the highest grades.

Copied from another thread (this thread is doing a lot better by the way, but there are still some unnecessary pot shots and generalizations going around)

Kudos to those who can talk about this and criticize without resorting to name calling, mass generalizations, or demeaning fellow men and women. You can feel passionately about something without being disrespectful.

From the site rules:

You should avoid:
Insulting a person's religion, religious beliefs, race, sex, sexuality, nationality, political beliefs, gaming preferences, etc. Debate is encouraged, as is civil disagreement, but respect the beliefs and opinions of others.
Insulting any group without proper justification.

Please keep this in mind as you continue to talk about this subject. Thanks. :)

Because which ever group takes one stance, the other has to be wrong.

Its because both sides are too busy generalizing everyone on the other side as fanatics/extremist/hardliners instead of actually fighting the fanatics/extremist/hardliners on their side that causes all the BS in the first place.

Too much self righteousness and pride. Not enough humility and understanding.

Well, religion isn't that strong in Sweden and those that I hang out with are mostly just cool people. Those that constantly pass judgement unto others bother me though, but there are plenty of atheists that does it too.
