Forums - Gaming Discussion - Without Playstation, would the industry be in another crisis?

When Sony made the PlayStation, they picked up Sega's strategy. That was first and foremost drawing people away from Nintendo (and since the Genesis did quite well in America, Sony extended that strategy to take Sega gamers too). It can be summed up as "Your first video game system was Nintendo (or Sega)? Aren't you too old for that by now? Their games are for kids. Come to us.", so if a company that relied on taking away consumers from other companies didn't enter, then the existing companies would have got to keep their consumers.

Playstation really grew the market. SNES+Genesis=80M. The Playstation alone had more than 100M sales. N64 and Saturn added another 40M sales. So Playstation sales couldn't have consisted of former Nintendo/Sega-customers.

I doubt it would have died. But it wouldn't be as big, as it is today.

Market would be much smaller than it is now.

Games series that most likely never would of came into being without playstation....

Tomb Raider - PC (would have grown on PC instead)
Resident Evil - agreed
Silent Hill - no idea
Tekken - home console, arcade (this was basically an arcade game and would be without playstation still be ported to other home consoles)
Dino Crisis - maybe
Blood omen: legacy of kain - no idea
Twisted Metal - yes (produced by Sony)
Suikoden - other console (Konami just picked the most popular platform, would have gone to another home console without Playstation)
Wild Arms - yes (produced by Sony)
Persona - other console (no, Atlus made numerous spinoffs from Shin Megami Tensei, without PS they still would have made Persona, just for a different console)
Arc The Lad - yes (produced by Sony)
Armored Core - other console (from would have just picked another platform)
Air combat aka "Ace Combat" - arcade, other console (the game started years before PS-release in arcades, would have come to a different console)
Final Fantasy VII - other console (FF was on NES and SNES before, without PS they would have stayed with Nintendo)
Final Fantasy Tactics - other console (would have simply been on another platform)
Grandia - other console (would have just taken another platform)
Alundra -other console (again, just another platform)

That's all of the ones that I could find at the moment. I agree with the op though.

I can't agree on your list. Just because a game started on PS (and not all games you listed did) doesn't mean it wouldn't exist. That only is the case for game developed or codeveloped by Sony and for games that would have been technically impossible (meaning cutscenes on CD). All the Arcade-games you listed would have just come to a different platform and some of these games would have been on PC (clearly that is true for Tomb Raider). Maybe even Resident Evil would have been developed for PC instead.

I dunno what would have happened if Sony didn't join in the video game market but am I the only one who thinks that Sony, in some way or form would have entered the market regardless if they made the original playstation or not.

Remember, Nintendo originally commissioned Sony to make them a CD based add-on or something to compete with the SEGA CD. Both got stupidly evil so the deal crashed and burned...

But irregardless, remember that Sony had wanted to enter that market plus they had another agenda, pushing the CD format.

Be it the PSone, an add on to the SNES or in cooperation with some other company, Sony would have entered the console market no matter what and its all because of wanting to push CD.

The same goes for the PS2, Sony made the PS2 to push the DVD format. The PS2 sold gang busters even though it was stupidly weak compared to the Xbox and the Cube because of lots and lots and LOTS of games that it got. heck there's even one where you're a mosquito.. Mr. Mosquito I believe... all that variety translated to shyet load of games. now, why did it have a shyet load of games?

I dunnot, i'm guessing that who ever was in charge of approving licenses or games for the PS2 was approve happy and stamped every single game that wanted in as "Approved ok for development"... or something like that... how else would you explain mr mosquito and all the other crazy nasty games out there.

If the PlayStation 4 was not their the Xbox One would be the frontrunner and the we would have day one dlc, no pre-owned games and a kinect that is mandatory.

Didn't know that the PS4 saved us from day one DLC... Thank goodness.

Whoops, meant to say always online. Just replaced one shitty thing with another in my mind.

Thanks for pointing that out.

This is the Game of Thrones

Where you either win

or you DIE

This post has so many errors and false facts that i do not even know where to begin with
Yet to summarize: Yes, the industry would be different if not for Sony PS Yet, it would also be different if not for Nintendo, MS, Sega, Atari, Namco, Square, Enix, etc etc etc etc In a way or another all the major publishers have changed the game industry
Nintendo, Sega and Atari are probably the most influential of them all due to all there history in terms of consoles and in terms of games
Would game industry be on a crisis? Definitely not...

playstation leads the way

Always sad to see people unable to have a mature discussion and showing a need to downplay the significance of a console/company simply because they don't like them. At least there are a few who understand the importance of all 3 of them.

The industry would have been much different without any one of the big three. I don't think it'd be in crisis without ps, but overall sales would have probably been down massively. Just because apple or Amazon could have stepped in, doesn't mean they would have done well.

Apple even was there and failed, no way they could have provided a proper replacement for PS:

No, there wouldn't be another crisis.

Other companies would take their place.
