The guys from Retro Magazine are bringing a new Retro based system to live that will use cartridges instead of normal game discs. Read: "Retro based", this system will not play old cartridges like the Retron 5 via emulation, but will be a standalone system were retro inspired games can be published on cartridges.
And if that looks vaguely familiar, that's because the guy making this system has purchased the molds for the old Atari Jaguar to use as housings for the new system.
Of course, old games can be republished on this system and new games can also be made for it. What kind of hardware is it running? It'll use an FPGA (Field-programmable gate array) chip. What does that do? You basically add a Hardware Description Language (HDL) to tell it how the hardware should run. You want it to act like a Neo Geo, add a Neo Geo HDL, want a Super Nintendo or a Sega Genesis, no problem. Exact specs aren't published, but this seems very cool. Instead of picking an architecture, they pick ALL the architectures.
The console will also be nearly OS-less. Put cartridge in, power on the console, play game.

That's the link to their facebook page. The console hasn't launched yet, but they will release a Kickstarter later this summer. Right now, they are talking with developers to get some launch games (yes, real launch games) for the system.
It'll use USB for it's controllers, which are modeled off the Wii Retro Classic controller (same company that makes them) (and yes, they will be WIRED)
So what do you think. Will this take off? Maybe take a look at their facebook page.
All I can say is that I'm genuinely curious to see where this will go.
