Sonic 3 is closer to a true sequel to SMW than Yoshi's Island. NSMBU is the nearest thing we got to a true sequel.

SM3DW has many Mario staples but isn't particularly influenced by SMW other than in its name. It's more of an evolution of galaxy than anything.
