Forums - Sales Discussion - Should Nintendo change their Brand Name in the west to 'Gameboy'?

Its an odd concept, but I am wondering if 'Gameboy' as a brand name would help them shake off some of the pointless negativity that helped undermine the Wii U. The 3DS is doing quite nicely and I think we can all agree it is mentally associated with the Gameboy by many of the core gamers who have leaped on it.

Edit, I mean 'Gameboy' instead of 'Nintendo'.

Maybe for their next handheld. But for home consoles as well? Nope, no way. Gameboy is too old and has never been associated with home consoles. Naming their next console that would just be a bad idea. If they wanted a new brand name for their next home console then a new kind of NES or something would probably be a better choice.

Edited my first post. Twice actually...

I dont think its a name that would work good in mordern age, many feminist wouldnt like it and many people would make fun of this name too.

Horrible person that I am my immediate thought was 'so half of Twitter would buy it and the other half would give it free advertising' when you made your point about feminists.

:o

Hell no! lol

They just need to drop Wii and have Nintendo abbreviated to N. Ala "N"64 or "NX" even though thats just a code name.

The handheld adopting Gameboy for their next portable would be wise IMO. DS is still a valuable  brand but I don't think they have anything to loose with Gameboy and they would generate buzz, nostalgia and the casual audience that made DS a relevant name are now gone from the dedicated space and will instead be buying Nintendo games on their phone this fall. Again Nostalgia is probably Nintendo's best way to get the non core audience to even look at one of their handhelds going forward, not that they need to. Their next system will comfortably sell 50m regardless.

I'd personally like to see the next Handheld name GameboyHD and have a huge GB/GBA archive available at launch, and the next console name NX, N8, NG8 (G for generation/8th)... Nintendo themselves should remain "Nintendo" til the end of time!

No, that would probably confuse people.

Nah their next console will no doubt be called the Wii Y or some shit

Nah, the Nintendo brand is still famous enough, just drop the whole "Wii" thing and name it something decent.

I think it would be too confusing for people which Nintendo has already been guilty off in the recent past.

What they need to focus on is getting Nintendo games (which are great) to as many people as possible.

This is the Game of Thrones

Where you either win

or you DIE

No, the Game Boy brand name is kinda irrelevant to the general public at this point.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
