Forums - Sales Discussion - 50% Marketshare- Its Coming.

Isn't 50% marketshare something more usual than people think? The NES sold more than 60 million units compared to the 18-19 million units the Sega M.System and the Atari 7200 combined, the PS1 sold 100 millions compared to the +30 millions of N64 and +9 millions of Sega Saturn, the PS2 sold more than the GC,XBox, Dreamcast and GameBoy Advanced COMBINED, and in every handheld gen Nintendo had almost a solid control of the market. Gens like the 4th and the 7th are the exception, not the norm.

Agreed. Still quite a feat considering what could have been.

While all the consoles have their merits, i believe the PS4 came right out of the gate with that both appealed to a broad gaming audience while steering away from some of the more negative trends such as always online, no second hand games and pack in cameras (kinect) and focused on the games.

I hope the Xbox One still remains a strong competitor into the future as this will only cause the PS4 to up it's game and I may just pick up an Xbox One when the price comes down.

This is the Game of Thrones

And let's face it, we are all acutely aware the reasons people would bring up handhelds in this thread.

Yeah.

What is funny is that the people who do it kinda reinforce the whole idea behind 50% marketshare being important. Just look at the platforms tha have achieved it.

NES
SNES(?)
PlayStation
PlayStation 2
Gameboy
Gameboy Advance
Nintendo DS
Nintendo 3DS

Each of these platforms have dominated the industry, in either the handheld or homeconsole markets in terms of sales and more important, in terms of software support. The PS4 breaking the 50% barrier is expected at this point, so we wont see much fanfare, but it does give a sign of a bright and postivie future for the platform.

The PS4 is 300k ish from a 50% marketshare. It will reach no later than June NDP (the batman deal will put it over if it is not already over).  The Wii got very close to this theshold back in 2008 but it never reached it.

No console has reached this milestone since the PS2. It is a big deal.

What ramifications will it have? The only one that I am willing to bet on is that MS wont be able to buy exclusivity on anything much longer the cost will be just too high.

Anyways when will PS4 hit 50%. I think June NDP. I think it will fall just short after April, and in May XB1  with Witcher 3 marketing and bundles will just barely hold it off. I think Batman PS4 marketing in June will push it over.

At this rate when we get the updated numbers im thinking closer to may at the latest.

And deservedly so as it should be. Nothing can stop this megaton now.

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

Yes, but there is no competition over there as Vita gave up a year ago. But for PS4 there are two. There are no competition for handhelds anymore in future unless if you consder mobiles and tablets which will dominate handhelds.
