I don't know about that. The PS1 and PS2 both had successors ~6 years after their launch and they were perfectly fine. Also, with the rise of cross-gen releases it isn't like the last gen system will suddenly get all support cut off.

A console gen does not end when the successors are released. Nintendo always ends the support for their consoles prematurely in my opinion. MS is following Sony's plan on supporting their consoles for a long time.

Ah, so you're talking about cross gen titles and smaller projects. Those are fine, but not a selling point for a console. I wouldn't say 7th gen is still alive and kicking by any means.

So we are talking about consoles that after 5 years when a new console drops, they can be phased out slower. I can see that. Still, the "need" (though it's honestly more a want of better graphics and performance) for a new console would be 5 - 6 years max. They're also doing that with $400 - $500 consoles, so it doesn't really show a need for a $1000 console either.

For one I think NX isn't a single device, instead it will be a family of devices available in different form factors and have different specs. Perhaps something like this.......

NX Portable-300 gflop, 2gb RAM, plays games at 540p
NX Console-1.2 tflop, 8gb RAM, plays same games at 1080p
NX Tablet-somewhere between Portable & Console, plays games at 720p

I also think we may no longer have generations in the traditional sense of supporting a device for 5-7 years then moving on to a completely new device. Instead I think we could see these devices being upgraded every few years.

Perhaps 3 years or so after the initial NX devices release, they receive upgrades with basically 2x the specs, NX Portable is now on par with Tablet, NX Tablet is now on par with Console, NX Console is now 2.4 tflop with 16gb RAM.

All or 99% of games are still playable on the older devices but they will just perform better on the newer ones. Maybe once the 3rd generation on NX devices releases, the 1st gen will start to become obsolete but by that point they would have a full 6 years of support so it's still a full generation.

This idea somehow resonates for me. It seems to fit with the new membership service they're working on, and a suite of devices rather than one console or one handheld fits the term 'new concept', which was used to describe the NX.

What nintendo need is a console that is more powerful than the current XBO and PS4 and has in technology wise the ability to just scale up from those devices.

Why... well if they release a product that is some weird hybrid, third parties will not make games for it.
If its close to the power of XBO and PS4, no one will care.
They need a device that males 3rd party games look significantly better and allow devs to upscale their games.

Unfortunately I don't think 3rd parties care much for Nintendo and until they sort that out, they will always be on the back foot.

Yes, we don't have enough powerful & expensive options already. We need more of those, and zero options between high-end and the Ouya. That can only end well.

Well you have the wii/ps3/360/3DS/PSVita. By the time Nintendo's next system is out PS4 and X1 will be $249, so theres always plenty of cheap options for those who want to be cheap

lmao. Or you could just buy a GBA for $40! Anyone who won't shell out $500+ on hardware has no right to play new games!

I do agree but, this could lead to Nintendo's bankruptcy. o.o

'The playstation and microsoft devices are increasingly getting geared more towards a longer than 5-6 year life cycle.'

Not this gen. These consoles are barely acceptable now. In 2 years people should be begging for something more powerful.

I heard that many say the GPU inside the PS4 is a around the performance of a radeon 7850 / 270 or geforce 760 / 660ti / 580 (cards around 160-170$ on newegg).

Alot of people dont have PCs with even that much in terms of GPU performance inside them.

Maybe 2 years from now, you can spend 100$ and get a GPU stronger than the PS4's. Thats still 2years away and a pc upg for most people.

I still dont think the current consoles are weak.

(IF you cannot build a better PC for less than a ps4 costs, then the consols are not weak).

(they are as strong as they can be for their price).

Also both are capable of HSA(L), where you code to make the cpu & gpu work together and use both at the same time for tasks, where it ll do parts of the code on whichever is better suited for the tasks at hand. Once game developers start useing it, they should be able to squeeze out abit more performance from the consols.

My SNES is a 16-bit console that has lasted me around 23 or 24 years. Much longer than I can say an Xbox system would last.

Thankfully none of the current gen systems cost that much :P

Also 4 of those 5 listed systems are still getting new games, pretty much as frequently as the Wii U lol. I'm sure the PS4 will still be thriving at the NX home console arrival just as PS3/360 was at the Wii U's, so same will apply then.

maybe nintendo should partner up with dell or so for a steam machine version of the next console. play steam games and nintendo games on the same console.

Can't be serious. This model nearly killed Sony and PlayStation 3. Billions upon billions lost on this model and same thing for the 360. Its not profitable and it shows because they made sure that profitability was possible on PS4 and X1.

Nearly killed Sony and the PS3?..... Someone call the hyperbole police. The main issue the PS3 had was its unique architecture, and the fact the 360 got a head start.

did you forget the billions in losses?
