Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo responds to Smash bros. Brawl glitch

Company says the dual-layer disc read error only affects "a very small percentage of Wii consoles;" provides free fix anyways.

Full Text:

I'm feelin' dirty

According to Nintendo, the disc read errors experienced by some Wii owners when they tried to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl this weekend were the result of a dirty DVD drive lenses and not buggy software.

Since Brawl is the first double-layer disc release for the Wii, a smudge or some dust on the lens can keep the title from running properly, said an entry on the Nintendo customer service page. If you'll remember back to the Japanese Brawl launch, this is the same problem that plagued that release as well.

Nintendo advises Wii owners not to disassemble their console. Instead, to have the console cleaned fill out a repair form from Nintendo's customer service website, and they'll do it for you free of charge.

Of course, that means no Wii for a while, but then again maybe you shouldn't be living like Pig Pen. Or is this all because so many Wii's were gathering dust lately? We may never know.

oh noes !

I would just take mines apart and fix it. If that didn't work, I'd just buy a new one.

Being without your console would be lame!

Something makes me doubt its just a little "dust" dual-layer DVD drives are everywhere and don't have any problem with it, and there are lense cleaning kits. You'd think Nintendo would just send out a free cleaning kit, as it'd probably be cheaper than having all the consoles sent in, taken apart, put back together, and shipped out again.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was faulty hardware.

(I hope stof doesn't consider this trolling, simply pointing out a possibility.)

Oh shit you said they're collecting dust! I get it lulz! It's because the Wii doesn't have any good games like the CellStation! Roflmayonnaise.

It's also a possibility that asking laymen to open up their system and fiddle with the insides will lead to a lot of bricked Wiis.

Actually, scratch that. It's a certainty.

If it was dust, why go through all the trouble of sending it in? What kind of "cleaning" could they be doing that couldnt be done with a cleaning kit bought from walmart? They are very easy to use.

Hell, I bet you could blow some canned air in it and make it work.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

So you think Nintendo is too ashamed about shipping unreliable hardware to admit it, and instead they're lying by claiming that it's caused by a dirty lense. And when you send it in for a cleaning, they're going to sneakily replace your optical drive so that nobody is the wiser.

 Oh Nintendo, you're so sneaky!
